Am Going to Fur Rondy

I am going to Fur Rondy next year. Anyone have any advice about what expenses will be? I already know what I’ll be taking. Any activities really worth participating in other than the auctions?

The auctions are generally not worth attending - mostly excess unsold inventory and old unsold garments. However if there is enough snow, the dog races are very much worth the trip. There are 2 - the ceremonial start of the Iditarod on the first Saturday in March, and the World championship open which is about a 90 minute heat on each of Friday, Saturday, & Sunday usually a week before the Iditarod start. Also if there is enough snow, the snow sculpture contest is worth viewing. Then there is the "Running of the Reindeer" which is a bit similar to the running of the bulls in Spain. The pond hockey tournament is really neat, and often held at night between various teams. Also, there is a capture the flag type snowball event that originated in Japan that is very entertaining. I saw my first wolverine parka on a guy playing in the tournament a few years ago.

That’s a dream to attend. Very envious.

It is always a lot of fun, and although most of the furs are worn by so called outsiders, youy will always gets lots of sincere compliments from locals on your furs.

I’ve long wanted to take a cruise to Alaska. Sometimes I think I belong there or in Canada more than I do in the South :/

Well, yes, it is in the mind and being confident, but if one is anticipating a negative reception for whatever reason, this can be off putting. Perhaps the key I would say is not not expect bad things to happen...wear your fur and let the chips fall where they may.

I am thinking of going next year as well. I haven’t started researching flights and accommodation yet, but Lynxette mentioned in another thread that it is low season at that time of year, so hopefully prices will be reasonable.

 

Does anyone know whether it is a good area for wildlife, e.g. seeing bears, whales, sea lions in the wild?

Oh my gosh yes, very good for viewing lots of wildlife of all types, including whales. And prices are indeed much lower than summer.

Lynxette is right. Wear you furs confidently with no arrogance. Thank people kindly when they pay you a compliment. I did those exact things today when my wife and I wore our Silver Foxes up to our local ski resort. People were entralled with our furs. Compliments abounded. My wife even let a lady pet her fur. Had a great time.

Wildlife is a variable situation. If going for Rondy, there should be no bears out. However you might see one or more moose, but that is not guaranteed. Most of the wildlife that time of year is the 2-legged variety.

 

If taking a cruise in warmer weather, try to book on a small ship such as those operated by Cruise West. The smaller ships can go places the big ships can't and will try to give you the best viewing of wildlife. The big ships are only interested in getting out far enough that they can open their casinos - where they get most of their revenue.

I have seen bears and whales in Alaska during the winter, I promise. AKcoyote is obviously correct that it is variable, and that is the case year round. Moose will walk right into neighborhoods to graze on tree branches...a stunning sight of a very largfe animal in some small yards.

FurBob, your foxes are indeed amazing. Where do you get them from? Do you specify the designs yourselves?
