PS3

*laughs* One of the reasons that I was gone for so long this past time was waiting in line to get this stupid machine.

Anyone else crazy enough to try and buy this 600 dollar nightmare?

On the other side, I also bought a Wii. *big grin* Go figure that I never even bothered to take the PS3 out of the box yet and I HAVE played the heck out of the Wii. The new Legend of the Zelda makes me *very* happy. YAY!

Anyways.

Personally, I'm not much of a video gamer. I prefer pinball. (A dying breed. )

However if there is one thing that might spur me to bying a Playstation it would be >> THIS <<.

I'm in the same camp with Worker.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday and we expressed our disinterest in video gaming and long for the old pinball machines and pool tables.

Poll is coming back now along wit bowling [never went away].

Hard to argue with gravity. Definitely have to work with it.

I'm going to get the Wii in January. It sounds amazing from all the impressions I've heard, I physically need to play Zelda!!!

When I was a kid, my Mom used to yell at my Dad that he never spent enough time with me, taking me places. Most of the time he'd rather sit in bars and drink.

So, when Mom would bytche at Dad, a compromise was reached:

He took me to the bars with him.

He tossed me a roll of quarters and said, 'Here, kid. Go play pinball and stay out of trouble."

I learned to play pinball at around six or seven years old, standing on a wooden chair to reach the machine.

So, you can sorta' see why I never really got into home video games.

There would probably be only a couple of games that would ever tempt me to invest in a PS3 if / when it ever arrives in Europe:

Vision Gran Turismo;

Armored Core 4;

any Tenchu game

Since the release of the PS3 was put back to March '07 over here, my interest in it has waned a little bit. Plus, the fact that I have Dark Crusade for my PC is helping distract me too (lovely Necrons.. hehehe)

If only the PS3 was all regions and backwards compatible, Kate - would love to come visit, and give you a game of Gran Turismo 4!!

Unclejoe I'm with you on Dark Crusade! waiting for total war 3 though, all I need now is a faster PC any sudgestions of something sensible?

I don't know Joe, you'd probably beat me. The only 'race games' I'm any good at involve crashing, like the Burnout games, or kart racing.

I love pinball too. I have an Addam's Family and Twilight Zone machine in my basement "borrowed" to me indefinitely by a friend who left the States to live abroad which I play from time to time. I'm sort of scared of breaking them so I don't use them ALL that often.

I still haven't touched the PS3, either.

You like Burnout too? Excellent!! As for not being good at Gran Turismo, I could always try teaching you, if you like?

V.T. -- Pinball machines were DESIGNED to be played! Unless you are a violent "Juker". (One who hits and shakes the machine to get the ball to go where you want it to... Often a less-than-successful tactic.)

Letting a pinball machine sit unplayed is like keeping a Harley Davidson motorcycle locked up inside your garage. You've got to take them out on the road and get them up to 50 M.P.H. every once in a while or they will stop working!

Go down to that basement and get those machines plugged in and start playing! That's an order!

SIR YES SIR! *salutes and plays the games*

It's not that I'm violent really, it's just that if I happen to play the heck out of them and they happen to have something come loose or break or who knows what, there isn't a soul I know of who will be available to put the wonderful reminder of my friend back in working order.

In any case, consider them played, though right now I think that even the basement dwelling spiders could beat *MY* high score.

If you don't play them enough the solenoids get stiff and the drop-down targets won't fall when they're supposed to. The bumpers won't bump and the flippers won't flip.

If you're a gentle player, there's probably nothing you can do to hurt them. These things consider bars and smoke filled back rooms at pizza shops to be their natural habitat. Drunk assholes would beat on them for hours at a time. They were built for abuse.

There are some wear and tear issues with the older machines but, overall, it's better to play them than to let them sit. If, about once every year or so, you take the glass off and wipe down the playfield with a damp cloth and polish the balls with a little car wax they'll stay looking good as new for a long time.

Unless you were a female truck driver in a past life I can't imagine there's anything you can do to hurt them just by playing them.
