JGalanos
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-REFURBISHED-DARK-RANCH-MINK-FUR-JACKET-FOR-MEN_W0QQitemZ310031481063QQihZ021QQcategoryZ57988QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem You see these occasionally ... I'm never sure what to think ... I'm assuming a used mink coat was taken apart and re-worked into this jacket. My concern would be you wouldn't know the age or condition of the used mink. You would think a reputable furrier wouldn't re-work a shoddy garment ... And a well cared for quality mink can last decades ... But I would still hesitate to take the plunge. A related concern is the price ... I bought my brand new mahogany mink jacket a few months ago for only a little more than what Oliver is asking for this "refurbished " jacket. Not convinced this is a good value. What do you think? Deal or no deal?
JGalanos
Okay ... The question was not rhetorical. 24+ hours, 40+ views, yet no reply? Not feeling the love. Was just curious if anyone had any thoughts or prior experience with "refurbished" furs. Not sure what to think. I can understand re-working a fur you owned (that was out of style or whatever) and knew the history of (you'd only be paying for labor) ... But not sure I'd be comfortable buying someone else's re-worked fur (where you'd be paying for material and labor).
cbernard92
It looks okay, mink isnt really my fur, I'm more of a long-haired fur guy (like the men in your avatar!!!! very nice!!!) Feeling some love now?
JGalanos
Feeling some love now? Feeling a tad better. mink isnt really my fur, Don't let that stop you from trying on Blackglama and Blue Iris mink while you are in the district!
Guest
I've done mostly Refurbished furs with all my jackets and planning on more and different furs from old. Having just gotten my Red Fox spread made from 'new' pelts and also having 'used' Red fox coats/jackets I'm planning on redoing, I have the advantage of dealing with both. Yes the new pelt spread is somewhat better than the worst of the used Red Fox furs. Though they have yet to be cleaned when they get redone. When I had my Lynx lined coat done the Lynx was cleaned and it's nearly as fine as the new pelt Lynx at Ungar's shop. Horst did the work and I debated with him weather to use the best of the three Lynx I have but Horst encouraged me to save those for reconstruction into another fur. Enough for a large coat or something else? All of these were gotten off eBay including a $25 Mink I had redone and the incredible $65 Indigo Fox I got off some fool. Sometimes you just luck out. That's not to say I haven't gotten a few duds. They've been passed on as cutters or resold for cheap. On average I make the Frugalfurguy look like a reckless spender. That's not to say I won't own more new pelt furs in the future. I still covet the full Beaver coat Horst made for a guy I Portland. Super prime Northeastern Canadian Beaver pelts. I've been tempted by Oliver Furs refurbished furs but I want them made my way as the song goes. OFF
Guest
I guess I felt like I didn't have a horse in this race...but objectively, I wouldn't pay that much money for a reworked coat, when for a couple thousand more, you could have one custom made exactly how you liked. We definitely love the JG!
ReFur
JG, (Sorry to take so long to answer.) This seller is the person I spoke of in the post of Red Fox. Call him. He will work with you. With what happened with Mink pelts in the last auction, it hard to say what will happen with other pelt pricing. Once Mink goes up, the other pelts usually follow suit. We may be heading for another market collapse in the fur market, like in the 80's. As far as the price goes, I think you got a great deal on your mink jacket. As for the question, "Would you wear it?" I think living in the city your answer would be different than others. OFF's lined leather jackets, I think, are of more use, on a day-to-day basis. Of course, being in his profession he might get some strange looks if he showed up in this mink jacket with construction workers. Linda

fursRme
Refurb means to me that the coat had some wear and was reworked into a smaller coat by cutting out the bad fur! As for price. Well I think its way to much for a refurb. I have a very nice Oscar DeLarenta mink I bought fo $700 off Ebay!
Guest
fursRme you're right. I picked up a Blackglama a few years ago for a bit over $200 with no apparent wear. I spent no more than $700 total for reconstruction inside a Carhart jacket. Most of mine have been done for less. So you can get some pretty fine furs if you shop carefully and have them rebuilt into something very distinctive and personal. OFF
JGalanos
I spent no more than $700 total for reconstruction inside a Carhart jacket. I forget about OFF, the host of Extreme Makeover: Fur Coat Edition.
Guest
Check Et cetera in The Gallery. http://vdsden.thefurden.com/cpgfd/albums/userpics/10033/normal_Lyxx-Lambsk001.JPG I'll have more over the next few days. The Timberland jacket was NWT and the Lynx was the lining from a used wool coat. The seller thought it was Coyote and I got it for a song. Didn't even have to dance Total investment was about $700. This was the expensive one. OFF Edit by AK: changed link to point to the image file rather than a relative position in the album.
foxkid
I was looking at getting something similar (and almost ended up getting a bobcat lined hoodie, but I had issues with sending via customs). How much did it set you back for the labour if you don't mind asking?
Guest
About half or about $350 plus cleaning the Lynx at Ungar Furs in Portland. I'll be posting my Bobcat lined buckskin Jacket soon. Not a hoodie but one of my most worn. It's incredibly comfortable for spring and fall. The labor on all my jackets is between $300 and $400 depending on the complexities.
