JGalanos
This topic has probably come up before ... But I'm wondering if we've polled the membership re: their motivation for joining the Den. I can think of at least three reasons someone would discover and subsequently join the Den: (1) An interest in beautiful women in furs. This Denizen (most likely male) would probably not seriously consider purchasing and wearing fur in public. (2) An interest in fur-related sexual gratification. This Denizen (again, most likely male) probably already owns or is seriously considering buying his first "fur toy". (3) An interest in fur fashion. This Denizen (male or female) probably already owns and wears fur or is seriously considering buying his or her first fur. The categories are kinda broad and not necessarily mutually exclusive. Am I off base or have I overlooked a fourth (and maybe fifth) category? Personally, I would fall into Category 3. For me, fur is furst and foremost about warmth, luxury, and fashion. I have to agree with WF -- Wearing fur is indeed the ultimate experience. I think we have a mixture of all three kind of folks here ... Probably more Category 1 and 2, fewer Category 3 ... Which helps makes the Den an interesting and lively place.
furcrazy
I would first have to say all of the above plus a place for me to express my love of fur with others. Also, thanks to all here, I have been slowly breaking out and starting to express my love of furs in my life. I was also a bit shy of showing my love of fur, but slowly I am breaking out of that. Thank you to all who are here. Furry Dreams, Furcrazy
Guest
Yes indeed, this question has been raised before .. several times before. Maybe it's tme for someone to post another questionnaire. OFF
JGalanos
Didn't mean to be redundant. It just seemed like with a few of the recent posts the site leadership might have been looking for some direction re: what the membership wants from the site these days. I would be interested to see the poll results (assuming a significant percentage of Denizens bothered to vote!). Assuming my 3 categories were sufficient, I do not think it would be 1/3, 1/3, 1/3. Who am I? Why am I here? Forget the questions! Someone gimme another beer!
frugalfurguy
JGalanos, as I've come to expect, you're very gracious. Assuming the threes are indeed less than a third of participants here, wonderful of you to acknowledge a positive contribution from ones and twos. Every once in a while I see posts from someone who's the partner of a 1 or 2. I wonder if maybe that's a potential 4: someone with a significant connection with someone (usually male) who's fascinated with beautiful women in fur (1) or for whom the sensations of fur are an important part of sexual expression (2). When I finally became willing to take on my resistance to join was thinking about replacing the toy rabbit coat I'd finally decided was done for. I didn't want shopping for its successor to be the self-conscious ordeal I'd made of such errands before, so talking it over with others who'd dealt with similar situations seemed an important thing to do. So I think I've already made it clear I fit with 2. But I think I'm also easily a 1. I believe I've a pretty good sense for what most men would consider a sexy woman. To me they're pretty. But they're only marginally sexy until they're wearing or playing with furs. On the other hand plenty of rather ordinary looking women appear to me far more sexy than the fur-lorn pretty women just by putting on furs. I don't identify too strongly with fur as a fashion statement. I'd say I really don't fit as a 3. I'd fit with my proposed fours only if I had the extreme fortune to find a ladilove who found furs sexier than I do. Dream on! frugalfurguy
shelley and kevin
We joined as we both love fur and are more into the fashion aspect of fur. There is the erotic part but that is whole different story:) I also like the women in furs part and Shelley likes the men in furs.
Worker 11811
I would be interested to see the poll results (assuming a significant percentage of Denizens bothered to vote!). JG; Go ahead and start a poll if you like. Any member in good standing is allowed to create poll topics. They aren't just for mods and Admins. You are right. Polls often don't reveal a lot of new meaningful information but they DO make great conversation starters.
lynxette
My original reason for joining the Den definitely had the most to do with reason number 3...I wanted a source of pictures to be used for adding new furs to my collection. Quite honestly, this remains my primary reason, although I have certainly learned a lot about myself and others as to the wonderful possibilities in the world of furs. Guest
Initially number 1 and 2 as you state them but after awhile number 3 became a reality as I wanted to make fur more a total part of my life. Also the more I began to "come out of the closet". I think #3 is more difficult initially for men than women. There have been many discussions of this alone here. Zaphod_bee
I totally agree with OFF at this point: it was definately 2 starting me into fur; but after I wanted to expand fur to my "normal" life, I started to be interested in 1 and 3. Nevertheless for me personal I have about 95% furry things for #2 and only 5% for 3 --> See the thread on furry dream to come true (the nutria pullover). FurLoverinFL
I don't really know if it was any of the above for me. I was soooo happy to find the old NTC (circa 1996) and learn that I was not alone in my love of furs. Met some folks there - anyone remember that old chat room Frank and Cosmo had? How about IRC? I was on that for awhile before finding the forerunner to this site at Delphi Forums. Since then, I've pretty been been a regular inhabitant of the Den. Kappa
I was told about the site through another forum member. He recommended The Fur Den because I was looking for interaction with others who shared our common interest. It just wasn't something that happened in his group. As for your proposed three categories, all three would apply in my case. (1) An interest in beautiful women in furs, yes. (2) An interest in fur-related sexual gratification. Since I became sexually active, I've always done what I good to make a woman's 'toes curl'. After a relationship while stationed overseas, I was introduced to the use of fur in bed and haven't looked back since. Unfortunately I haven't met a woman since that shared a similar interest but I did pick up a massage glove that has almost always worked to heat things up. (3) An interest in fur fashion, yes. Being taught by an old-fashioned grandmother, with what some consider 'old' fashion sense. I was taught that to really show a woman she's special is to give her a fur. Times change and so does opinion. I don't do this much anymore but if I think there's an interest, I'm more than happy to give presents.

FLinFL You know, FLinFL, I definitely DO remember NTC, but my perspective on it at the time was entirely as lurker with the one exception. I saw another furlover calling a marten coat mink--it was one of the Deborah Harris Grosvenor shots, and I was dead sure he'd mislabeled it and wrote him a sharply worded, self-righteous note correcting him. He responded letting me have my point but slyly speculating the coat was lined with mink. I certainly was not at that time willing to actually converse with other fur lovers, so mostly I secretly went in and looked and read, and then I felt ashamed of what I'd done. I'm glad the way some things change. Thanks for bringing up these recollections and giving me this chance to see how far I've come. frugalfurguy
cbernard92
I wanted a place to be feel comfortable with furs, my friends know I like furs and they think its fun when they see me in furs (at a vintage clothing store or if we happen by a fur coat store, I persuade them to watch me try on furs) but there is nothing like talking forever about fur on this website. Its my favorite!
wfur
Moons ago, #2 with a tinge of #1. Though now still mainly 2, I more appreciate the fashion aspect as well as a forth category, the environmental side you might say. I having gone through High School during the late 60s early 70s always related to and have worked in the environmental/energy field. Natural materials are one of the alternatives to oil and are elegantly efficient systems. Add these aspects as well as the unmatched sensory delight of fur and leather; you have something that is unmatched in life. Three? Since I'm a two since near birth I still might be a bit self conscious, especially around some family members who "know." The strange reality though is that I think it would mostly be for the feel, look, and utility.

Cunning Fox
I share many attributes of 1 and 2. For as long as I have been sexually active fur has been a much enjoied stimullus either physical or visual. However as with a previous post of mine I agree with 'wfur' that the environmental friendliness of fur is an issue of much interest for me. So I guess there could be many more reasons other than just 1, 2 or 3. Who out there has some different reason for being here?
brandy-uk
I joined the den because I was lonely in the internet world.. I had joined other fur related sites but had been a bit 'hurt' and 'bumped' by others.. then Furboy1973 gave me a nudge in this direction.. it was also helped by UncleJoe.... i must admit I was very worried and scared about being so open about my love of fur and how people would react.. (up until now I had only met with resistance and problems from others and other sites).. but i found some of the friendliest and most helpful 'friends' I have ever experienced... This site has become a second home to me.. I am so pleased that I was led here.. and I cannot thank the 'Den' enough for its support.. For my desires.... well number 2 and number 1..rated pretty highly... oh and number 3 too.. hmmmm, oh dear.. makes me look like an easy target.. he he I truely love this site.. auzmink
Good question, I guess 2 followed by 1, onto 3, and perhaps contemplating 4 (whats that - well I think trying to extend the boundary into wanting to be creative with fur - ie not just looking, touching, feeling but perhaps being creative - not sure how to do that yet....but....where their is a will...... JerseyFurLover
I guess I'm pretty much into 1 and 2 with a little bit of 3 mixed in, more probably as i get more into conversations with other about it's role in fashion. I know for me this site has been a great help for me to feel comfortable with my affinity to fur. I felt for the longest while that I was the only one who enjoyed fur on this level. I found the Chelsea and Renee fur sites a few years ago and saw that I obviously wasn't alone, but then I just happened on the FurDen and things took off. I at first was just an observer, but took the plunge, became a member, and have enjoyed every second of it. As a young guy with this like for fur I was uncomfortable expressing it, but in the few months since joining, i feel more comfortable after talking and charing with all of you fine people at this amazing site! (Special thanks for this goes to Brandy-Uk and Minkman)
sta
I remeber stumbling across NTC back in 1995 when we got internet access at my college. My world changed entirely when I found out people were into fur like me. For me I have no desire to wear fur myself, I prefer to see real life ladies in fur. Luckily my wife inherited a full length mink a few years back and now she indulges me in my fur pleaures! Still my internet actions and persona are definitely kept secret.! fox4me
I have been a solid three since I can remember. The mention of the word fur throws a switch in my head that takes me to the most wonderful place on Earth. As a kid , I used to happily ride my bicycle all over creation just to see the window displays of the local furriers. I also couldn't wait for my family to go out and leave me home. The second I was alone, it was into that special closet and put on my mothers furs for as long as I could possably wear them. I always thought this was my dark secret and there was something wrong with me. This site makes me feel 1000% better about myself in my love of fur. Not only do I own several beautiful furs, but wear them proudly and lovelingly whenever I damn well please without a second thought. I have this site and all the wonderful friends on it to thank for helping me see the light. There is no greater enjoyment for me than to pick out a fur on a cold day and enjoy its company as I go about my business. (by comming here regularly, I figure the money I save on therapy I can spend on furs.....ha ha!)
JGalanos
I agree, Fox4me. (And apparently also rhyme sometime.) For me, fur has always been first and foremost a fashionably luxurious means of keeping warm. I currently have 10 furs hanging in my closet ... And with the vast number of furs and colors available to choose from I fear my collection will continue to grow to at least a baker's dozen. For me, furs are like Lay's potato chips ... I can't own/wear just one. I have always had an affinity for luxurious fabrics and textures. I love fine quality velour, chenille, cashmere, etc. ... With fine furs topping the tactile fabrics list.
