American Gangster chinchilla coat

I just saw the scene in American Gangster where the chinchilla coat is burned. Is it just me or does the coat look suspiciously like rex rabbit? I have a hard time believing the filmmakers would burn a valuable chinchilla coat when they could easily substitute a much less costly rex rabbit coat.

Here are two photos that I uploaded:

They made two coats for the movie...I believe it was done a few years ago by Wachtenheim Furs in L.A...they sell under the handle "dwachte915" on eBay, I believe.

The fur Frank Lucas' wife puts on him in the first scene with the coat is real chinchilla. Wachtenheim tried to sell the coat on eBay for $11,000 several times; I don't know if it actually sold. However, the hat he is wearing in the boxing ring scene is apparently rex rabbit...

...but of course, for the coat-burning scene (the horror!), your eyes are sharp. That was a rex rabbit that the costumer probably bought for a few hundred dollars. It could have even been a well-dyed fake; however, having done screen tests with fake vs. real fur coats, I would always substitute rex rabbit for chinchilla when necessary.

Still...what a stupid move on Lucas' part, to go to the boxing match all pimped out and expect to fly under the fuzz's radar. That's pretty much how it happened, too. Silly gangster.

Seems to me that the fire might have looked a little fake in that movie. Did they indeed burn a coat at all?

The information I have corresponds to what Joe states above. Yes the furs are real, but no, the Chinchilla is not destroyed...thank goodness. Still a shame that the rabbit is though. The scenes with the furs are wonderful and add to what I think is a good film overall.
