Links (URLs) in messages

Hello.

On this new forum system, URLs in messages have been truncated. Eg:

http://www .photosight.ru/photo.php?phot ... on&refid=2

http://www .photosight.ru/photo.php?phot ... on&refid=2

(from viewtopic.php?f=20&t=10143)

so you can't tell one from another sometimes. I cant find a setting in the User Control Panel to change this back to listing the whole URL. Eg:

http://www .photosight.ru/photo.php?photoid=2668170&ref=section&refid=2

http://www .photosight.ru/photo.php?photoid=2667799&ref=section&refid=2

[sorry - had to put spaces after http://www so my URLs are seen as I entered them]

Another question ......

Can we change it so if we click on a link that goes outside this site, it opens up in a new window please. Right-click and selecting Open in New Tab (or Window) is a fair bit more long-winded when there's quite a few links to look at.

Thanks for the time and effort put into this fine place ....

Naomi.

I'll look into it at the first chance I get time to sit down and look.

Just from my view on the surface, it might be a problem with characters like "?" and "&" in the text links. Sometimes the system chokes on links with "&" and "%" and "?" in them.

Not 100% sure on that. I'll let you know what I find when I look into it deeper.

I do not know for sure, but I think the shortening of displayed links was done to prevent the need to do as much horizontal scrolling to view topics where a post has an extremely long URL included. As Naomi indicated, this probably should be a user preference option.

As for the link not opening in a new tab or window, I too feel that is a problem. We will be looking for a way to change that behavior. It may take some time to locate the code that needs to be changed, so please be patient.

Not a problem.

As much as it appears like I'm working on this site all day, I actually "snipe" several times throughout the day.

So, when a problem or a question does arise, I can usually handle it the next time I get a chance to sit down and look into it. Depending on what the question is and what other things I'm doing, I can handle most requests within a day or two. Sometimes I can handle them right away. Other times it will take me longer.

Whatever the timing or the problem, I try to handle them as soon as I can.

We are making progress.

The display of abbreviated URLs occurs when the URL exceeds 55 characters. As this was done to improve readability by reducing the need for horizontal scrolling to view an entire post, I am currently reluctant to change this behavior.

Some testing is needed, but I think I found a fix for URLs in posts not opening in a new window. I will update this post after I have completed my testing.

Added later: Test was partially successful but caused extra text to be displayed with URLs in new posts. Summary: more research needed, but we are in the right area.

Good to know. I thought I was the only one bugged by this change.

The URLs not opening in a new tab or window problem has proven much more elusive than expected. Due to other work on the site and available time constraints, it may be a while before we have a solution to the problem.

  • 2 weeks later...

Links in new posts should now open in a new window or tab.

Unfortunately, links in posts older than this post will still open in the same window or tab.

Actually we wound up with a slightly different and more comprehensive fix, but it is the results that count.
