More UK television

Hi all

I've just seen a trailer for a show coming up on Channel 4 on Sunday (10th August) 10pm called "Kill it, skin it, wear it". It's about a woman who wears fur but will she be willing to after seeing the process of how animals are farmed (and trapped), killed and skinned?

It's hard to tell from the trailer if it's going to be biased one way or another but one sound bite was her saying something like "I've seen worse animal treatment on a normal farm" so it may be fair.

I am alone in thinking that no 'positive' view of furs or the people who wear them can come out of a 'documentary' called 'Kill It, Skin It, Wear It.'???

Several months back, maybe about a year ago, someone approached the members of the Den and claimed to be associated with UK television. They were supposedly doing a series on people with 'extravagant tastes' and wanted some 'fur lovers' to appear in it. I'm thinking this might be the result...

Of all the pro beef or pro pork meat episodes do they show the slaughter because they know it would be inflammatory.

The only times I've seen the slaughter is in Science or "How They Do It" shows. I can count the ones I've seen on one hand with a lot of fingers left over.

After reading about Merrilees Parker I am inclined to think the "Report" will be anything but unbiased or show fur in any kind of friendly light.

I expect an expose on the inhuman treatment of Silk Moths next.

In the eighties the anti-fur lobby brought the industry to its knees. But now fur is back on the catwalks, in the magazines and on the high street. Today around 400 designers use fur compared with only 45 in 1985.

Sounds like a potentially interesting show, but based upon the blurb above it does not sound to me like they have their facts right. Perhaps they are UK relevant, but I don't think they apply to the global fur industry. <?> I think "to its knees" is a tad hyperbolic ... And even if it's not I think the correct decade would have been the 90's, not the 80's. I would also challenge the "45 (designers) in 1985" statement. Fur was very popular in the mid 80's (at least in the US) and fur fashion shows were prevalent in New York and other large US cities at that time.

So did anyone else watch this programme?

To be honest, fur has always been a guily pleasure for me. I don't believe all the Peta hype, and I was vaguely encouraged to see the mink farm and trapping portrayed in a favourable light.

The man from Peta obviously did his best to emphasise the poor practices of some/many farms. But do we know how prevalent such practices are?

Do we think Merrilees' view about the need for regulation of the industry is fair? It does seem strange that auctioneers have no idea where the pelts come from.

Again, I have no idea how many "bad" fur farmers there are. I wish the programme had been more in-depth with its facts and figures.

I love fur too much to give it up, but I would feel a little less guilty if I felt confident that all fur was ethically harvested.

I'm glad I didn't have the opportunity to watch it. I'm certain I would have been really pissed.

Let's get real.

What fur farmer in his right mind would treat his/her animals poorly???

Have you heard of a dairy farmer who beat his cows?? Do you think that would be counter-productive??

Get real

I have no more guilt wearing and sleeping under my furs than I do poring milk on my cereal in the morning or eating that really tasty hamburger on occasion.

PeTA must think we are all stupid.

Sorry to seem a bit dumb, but what did merrilees conclude about fur? And did she keep the bits she already had? Got to admit, she did look nice when trying on those furs early on in the prog, although i don't think that huge mink coat really suited her - a fox jacket, maybe?

Any info would be great..
