mailonfurs
I recently received this email message. Anyone heard of anything about it? I am writing to your organization to bring to light an absurd action by PETA in a small town in Manitoba Canada. Recently there was an abominable beheading murder of a young man named Tim McLean on a Grey Hound bus traveling to Winnipeg. PETA has attempted to connect this evil act with the lawful cultivation of fur bearing animals. The purpose of me bringing this incident to your attention is to expose what kind of insensitive narrow minded organization PETA is. With a little research, an average person like myself can find many flaws (and perhaps lies arguably) with their anti-fur arguments. I wrote to the Portage Daily Graphic: I have had a run in with PETA in Vancouver as my wife was verbally attacked and physically obstructed by radical members of this organization while walking on the street. She was walking to work and wearing a 40 year old coat that was handed down to her from a relative. These self-righteous attackers had no interest in asking her about the context behind the fur, but rather flew into a premeditated frenzy that included stopping my wife's progress on the street, using profanity and imposing their narrow value system which neither factored cultural considerations (i.e. my wife comes from a society where wearing fur has no stigmas). Furthermore their forcefully imposed value system did not agree with my CANADIAN value system of wearing fur. PETA's response was appologetic, which was appreciated, but their argument and cited evidence was weak when arguing against the use of fur. They stated that wearing fur is environmentally harmful, yet I understood a fur was made of skin and hair which would probably decompose if not taken care of. Surely, a fur must be better for the environment than the oil-based petroleum synthetic product that the representative suggested my wife should wear (emphasized with profanity). Also on the PETA site, I found that their evidence was questionable due to the age. Some of the so called evidence was almost 10yrs old. I was so angry from the my PETA experience that I approached different fur companies in Vancouver and quized them on their practices. They all were happy to spend time with me and provide me information as well as direct me to agencies that are not part of their company to provide NON-emotionally charged sober evidence re. the humane cultivation of furs. Their evidence seemed much more logical and current than PETA's evidence. However, what spurns me about PETA was not my personal run-in with them, but the insensitive and arguably criminal slander of that organization which connected the barbaric evil attack on Tim McLean with the lawful cultivation and most often humane processing of un-indangered animals. I encourage the people of Manitoba to take issue with this attack on the McLean family and look into legal action against PETA. Perhaps successful litigation against this organization will stop their exploitation loving people that are dealing with an impossibly difficult situation. My heart goes out to the McLean family. PS: I did not contact the sender et, nor I asked his permission but I think he would agree to post this message so other fur passioned persons would look at it and give them the support they need. RonGav
I believe most of us have heard of this atrocious killing and display of barbarism. However I had not heard any details relating the cause of the incident. If someone has documentation of this person's claim of PETA involvement, we all would appreciate learning more. I will research as well. If this is true, their members have sunk to the lowest level of inhuman behavior. But we must know for sure.
wallee
Peta's not the only group of idiots trying to take advantage this horrible event. Westboro Baptist Church is sending a bunch of morons as well. A quick search found these... Google Search Peta's stupidity and their justification. It boggles my mind that anyone could convince themselves they are justified in further tormenting this poor guys family.
Worker 11811
I've done a little bit of searching on the subject. A guy named Tim McClean was murdered on a Greyhound bus but I can find no direct linkage to whether or not he was wearing fur nor whether he was a fur lover. Here is a link to a new story from CTV Winnipeg (Canada) on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnkUlVcL4CY The only linkage to PeTA I have found was one short paragraph I found at Wikipedia: After the incident, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent an advertisement to the Portage Daily Graphic comparing the murder of Tim McLean to the killing of animals for food. The ad was rejected by the paper and criticized for being in "bad taste", and that "the ad will do nothing to advance the cause of PETA except turn people away". Here is an article from the Winnepeg Sun about PeTA's advertisement: Thu, August 7, 2008 PeTA ad slammed: Compares beheading to slaughter of animals By ROB NAY, SUN MEDIA An animal rights group attempted to purchase an ad in a Sun Media-owned newspaper which compares the beheading of Tim McLean Jr. to the slaughter of animals. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals officials hoped to run an ad this week in the Portage Daily Graphic that uses lines such as, "An innocent young victim's throat is cut" and "The man with the knife shows no emotion." The description leads the reader to believe it's describing McLean's death aboard a Greyhound bus last week about 20 km west of Portage la Prairie. Only later is it revealed the ad is referring to the slaughterhouse treatment of animals. "We're really challenging everyone who was shocked by this horrendous crime against Tim McLean to go to our website and see for themselves that animals every day go through exactly what he went through," PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt told the Winnipeg Sun yesterday. Barry Clayton, publisher for the Portage Daily Graphic, said the ad would not appear in his newspaper. PETA has made the text available on its website. One friend of McLean's said PETA's ad is misguided. "I'm behind animal protection ... but don't try and take away from what Tim was. He was a great person," said Doug Mitchell, who helped organize a vigil for McLean at the Manitoba Legislature last weekend. "It just seems they're trying to take that away from the light. I know Tim loved animals ... but don't run something so gruesome with something else that's gruesome." PETA did not contact McLean's family regarding the ad, Rajt said. She said McLean's death was horrific and that "our hearts go out to his family." One ethics specialist described the ad as deliberately shocking. "It's meant to draw attention to their cause," said Arthur Schafer, director of the University of Manitoba's Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics. The ad seems geared towards forcing people to confront the treatment and slaughter of animals, he said, adding it could backfire and not generate sympathy for animals at all. "It's timing is such I think it will massively turn people off," said Schafer. Peter Miller, a scholar in philosophy and ethics at the University of Winnipeg, said the ad is a gamble on PETA's part. "I would think (the ad) would cause harm for the friends and family of McLean. Others may be revolted by it or think it's in bad taste," said Miller. McLean's family could not be reached for comment yesterday. We've really got to be extra careful in linking information together from sources that aren't necessarily true. It is easy to get these things all blown out of proportion and turned into arguments that aren't necessarily so. Think for a second... IF PeTA could be linked, even remotely, to the killing of a person because they were wearing fur or because they liked fur, it would spell the beginning of the end for them. The group is already under FBI investigation for terrorist activities. At this point, the government has tabled the case because they don't have enough evidence to prove that PeTA are terrorists. But, if it was true that they condoned this killing, the FBI would be all over them like flies on s#it. No, I think this is just another case of PeTA acting like the media whores they always have been.
Guest
The murderer was obviously a very deranged person and the whole thing out of a horror movie. Why would such an event warrant such attention in Winnipeg, Canada vs Des Moines, Iowa? The folks making the absurd connections are as deranged as the murderer and are worthy of no attention what-so-ever. OFF
JGalanos
I'm not sure which is more shocking/horrifying ... The grisly murder itself or PETA's callous disregard for the victim's family's feelings. P.S. The Phelps family should be institutionalized. And spayed.
White Fox
Folks, I am Canadian, and this is even worse than described here. I am including a tiny bit of information, and then I ask that we respect the family, and try to just leave this alone re details of the murder. First off, there were no furs involved in any way that I have found. Remember two things. This report does not even mention that. Secondly, the praries are very warm this time of year. Sometimes reaching 30 degrees C, so it is very unlikely furs would be involved. As to a certain animal rights group (I try to not even recognize them by using their name), they have no business comparing these two things. The victim was not put to sleep before hand. etc. They use leather shoes. They eat food that is grown using animal manure. They have no business talking about this issue like this. Hopefully they turn off more and more people to the point of no return. lastly, there is info that has not come out here. If you knew what it was, you would not want it to come out either. Yes, there was body mutilation. But, I wish that was all that it was. I am going to leave it at that, and once again, ask that we try to leave this with as little conversation as possible due to respect for the family (or families as we do not know the family of the murderer) involved. Possibly the murderer's family is as put off by this as much or more than anyone else is. Again, I am not forbidding further discussion. I am not locking this. I just ask that we be very careful in discussing this subject as it could lead to an area that we are very sorry that it led to. If you are thinking of posting the details of this incident, please DO NOT!!! Thanks all White Fox
thursdayfullcollapse
PETA consider non human animals (particularly mammals) to have the same rights or be deserving of the same rights as humans. Whether you agree or disagree with that I don't understand why you find this a suprising development. Their stance on this matter is merely the logical extention of that stance. They believe that the killing of animals is equal to the killing of humans so naturally this tragic event is nothing on the tragic plight of animals worldwide. I do not agree with them personally but you can understand how they think and respect their choice just as we wish they'd respect ours. We should stand above them not get down in the mud alongside them. Additionally PETA has absolutely nothing at all to do with the killing itself. PETA is a mainstream organisation that has clearly decided popular support not a small vanguard is how to get what they want and killing humans would be without doubt the worst thing they could possibly do to achieve that. PETA are a lot of things but they are not murderers. Perhaps individuals within their organisation are more extreme than the organisation themselves and do take things further than PETA would like, but that's not PETA's fault. Until you have any evidence that PETA's central authority had any part in this I would urge you to stop spreading lies.
Worker 11811
Thursday; We have already established that the killer acted alone. There are several links to other sites in the posts above that give good accounts of what actually happened and what PeTA's connection to this is really about. News accounts of the story hint that the perpetrator of this killing may have been mentally unsound. There is speculation that he may be delusional or paranoid schizophrenic. Nobody is sure about this guy's state of mind because he has not been sent for psychiatric evaluation yet. They can't do that until he is assigned a public defender. Regardless, it is pretty clear that the guy acted for his own reasons and that PeTA did not have anything to do with the killing. PeTA's only connection to this story is that they tried to take out an ad in a newspaper. If you go back up to my post above you can read direct quotes from other websites and you can click on links that will take you to the sources of those quotes. Again, I am going to urge people to be extra careful not to read anything into this story that isn't printed in black and white and which doesn't come from a reasonably reputable source. I would also caution people against skimming. Reading only parts of a topic thread will certainly lead one to unfounded conclusions and can cause everything to be blown out of proportion. We need to be very careful, here.
cbernard92
Peta's not the only group of idiots trying to take advantage this horrible event. Westboro Baptist Church is sending a bunch of morons as well. I really really despise Westboro Baptist Church, did you know their website is actually called "godhatesf*gs.com"????? They are so insane and disrespectful, I saw a women from their church on the news talking about how she protested at a dead soldiers funeral after he was killed in Iraq. That is just sick! The father of the soldier apparently sued and got a large amount of money from the Church.
Worker 11811
Yes, I know who the WBC are. I was trying to ignore them because I think they are idiots too. Most of the time, the best thing to do with idiots like them is to ignore them.
lynxette
I have heard of no connections between this horrible incident and PETA to this point in time. If such a connection did exist it would not in my view change nor enhance the absolute wrongness of the act in any way. What was done is a crime in any and all senses of the word period, and should be treated and punished as such.
Worker 11811
Has anybody here ever heard of the "Pizza Bomber?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza_bomber That incident happened near where I live. Emotions ran high in this quadrant of space for quite a while. Eventually things settled down and got back to normal. I think the same thing will happen in this case as well. You just have to give it time. The FBI finally did solve the case and the woman responsible has been found mentally unfit to stand trial. She was jailed on separate charges before she was judged incompetent so she is, technically, in prison as we speak. Basically, she is going to be kept in custody at the state hospital for the criminally insane until such time as she may be judged competent for trial. If and when that day ever comes she will stand trial for Murder-One. She has been found guilty in one other murder and she has been involved in at least two more murders. If she ever comes to trial on this latest murder it will be a slam dunk case. The only thing stopping her from going to the gas chamber is the insanity judgment but, when it all comes down to the bottom line, this woman will never see the light of day again. Judging by what I've read, the murderer in the Tim McLean case will probably meet the same fate. If he ends up being judged competent for trial he will probably end up in a "Super-Max" lockup for life. If he ends up being judged incompetent, he will probably end up in the booby hatch.
