I recently got 'let go' last week. Well, I got my first offer for a new job however it's in Anchorage, Alaska. Can anyone here tell me any pro's and con's about the place?

Kappa,

I live in Anchorage. The cost of living is higher in Alaska than almost anywhere else in the US except Hawaii because almost all goods have to be shipped in from the Seattle area. Many people like the scenery and recreational opportunities, but the winters can be long and dark. Recent winters have seen relatively few days with lows below -5 F. Winter temps in Anchorage tend to range from highs in the 20s to low 30s F to lows in the teens to 0 F. Average seasonal snowfall is around 72 inches, but there is seldom more than 14 inches on the ground at any time. Summer highs can get into the 70s F. The average annual precipitation is around 16 inches.

As OFF said, "furs are OK". Anti-fur types don't get any following here because historically in many parts of Alaska furs were absolutely necessary for survival.

Thanks AK, I appreciate it. From what you've mentioned, it sounds 'a lot' like MN most of the time. Well, minus the lack of sun for part of the seasons. Otherwise, it doesn't sound like too much of a change. Believe me, I'm not trying to steal anyone's thunder by saying that but how the winter's are here in MN, they are 'very similar'. I do appreciate the info!

alaska is a "love it" or "hate it" place. i lived there for 35 years. i only have one good thing to say about it. "they pay one of the best retirements there is".

the winters are to long, the summers to short, its a 2000 mile drive to civilazation. anchorage is a suburb of L.A. it has a the highest crime rate in the state, per-capita it is higher than boston, L.A., seattle. just my two cents worth, i am on the "hate it" side. if you do end up, up there go see a friend of mine "david green" he has some of the nicest furs anywhere.

The David Green company is also one of the most overpriced furriers in Anchorage - buyer beware.

Well, a nice salon is always good to know about. Right now though, I'm only trying to learn what I can about the area so I can make a informed decision about the position. Anything, anyone can share is welcome in my opinion.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just moved to Anchorage 2 weeks ago and I've been staying in a hotel until my stuff gets here. I'm a little apprehensive to get out and explore the fur stores down on 4th (i have social anxiety issues). Anyway, I have a few coats and a huge coyote blanket (in transit) that I want to get cleaned/glazed but I don't know how to go about doing it.

AKCoyote, you got any suggestions on which place to take them to? Normally, my girlfriend would have taken care of getting them cleaned back home, but we split up, she moved out, and I took off with everything and came to work up here in Anchorage. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Thanks.

Hadeki,

If you moved from Florida, you will experience both climate and culture shock.

As my info may be a bit too biased, I will reply to the question via PM rather than here.

I can think of no better excuse to get yourself "out and about" than to go check out a fur store! If you are anxious, I can certainly imagine that something as familiar and comforting as fur would help take the edge off. In the unlikely event your anxiety gets the better of you there's no place I'd rather be! Don't you think?

And, besides... What the hell!... Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Right?

From what I've heard from both members here and members on another site I frequent, Anchorage is supposed to be a pretty good place. Unfortunately, at this point I haven't heard anything positive on the job I was offered so I'm starting to believe it may not happen. When I do get a new job, I'll be sure to share the news. For now however, things just seem to be pretty dry in my area of the job market..
