Where is everyone?

Man, it is quiet around here lately? Noticed that?

One thing we have noticed from our stastics is the large number of people still coming here. What countries they are coming from, etc. Indeed July and August were way down as we knew and suddenly it jumped again. The numbers are telling us that members here are now spending a whole lot of time in our Wiki (which of course includes links), as well as the Gallery. For instance last month, the Library had almost 100,000 hits. The Gallery of course had many, many times that. I forget without looking but think it was 8 or more times that.

***In other words, this is just a huge place any more and people tend to "get lost" in here. It used to be there were only forums - in fact only one forum really. Thus only one place to go. But now, there are so many places. For instance, we now have almost exactly 1,000 links in our links list that are rated and checked twice a year. And no repeats there! (One of the biggest fur links area on the net if not the biggest.) Add to that the 17,000 photos in the Gallery. Then there is the rest of the Library which is becoming much more popular than we had thought. (proven by stastics.) By the time you explore all of our links and photos in the Gallery, it is time to begin exploring it all over again to find the great new entries and photos you had forgotten. Imagine how long it will take you to look at a thousand individual links for instance!

We would love though to know your thoughts on how to improve the forums area. What can we do to encourage new members to come? And even more important to actually POST!? What can we do to make this place more attractive and exciting for you?

We are always looking for suggestions on how to improve the site. We are willing to listen to any ideas though the radical ones sometimes lead to a lot of discussion. We do have to stay within our server's rules.

If you have any ideas for improvements here - or even if you want to question something we have done please let us know. That is what we are here for!

Have fun in the Den folks. This is your home away from home!

WF,

Due to my schedule, I'm usually passing through around 4a Eastern time (little later on my off days), and checking the posts. I try to post if I feel I have an appropriate input to any particular thread; otherwise I just lurk.

Brandy, I don't get tired of your posts, and i'm sure most of the other members don't either.

Whitefox, I have been thinking about the same issue for a while. Have you recently checked the old furden archives? I think that's a treasure little appreciated. But, going through the archives, you see how similar topics pop up from time to time. With the advent of cold weather, a flurry of activity sets in, then each summer, the place gets quiter... First time fur sightings, first time wearing fur outside, furrier experiences, the excitement of a good ebay catch, fur care and cleaning issues, custom fur designs... Let's admit it, how many different ways can you talk about furs? After a while, it is bound to be repetitive. This is why photos/videos and ebay sections see so much activity, because with each new photo or new ebay listing, there is something new to talk about.

Still, I love this place. Thank you all!

Samurman... You really got to the heart of the issue with this post I think. You will notice a post that I made recently in a thread by Roninphy. What you have said here in this quote, and what I tried to say there, is that so many people become new members here and never post. Those new members are the ones who could give us so much on all of these sites. People get tired of hearing from we "Old Farts" just as you said. If these people would begin to post now and then think of the fun and excitement we would all have - including them. Mikhail's site for instance has not had a lot of posts lately. But think of how much a couple of new members could stimulate that site. Much of their activity is finding links, but just think how new people think to search in different ways. Each fur site has a different atmosphere. But just think here if new members posted and old posted like they used to just how exciting it would be here and on other sites as well.

Here, think of the activity we could have from new people in all of our different forums.

***One of our staff has mentioned - and I totally agree - that the world economic problems probably have more to do with this than we want to think. If a person has lost his job - or is worried about how he will feed his family - he will not want to spend a lot of time here. I remember of hearing (because I am site owner) of how a member of ours (in US) who posted often was at the time posting in a library when he visited our site as he had no home and was living in an unheated shack. No one else knows of course who this is or ever will. It breaks my heart when I hear of that. Here I talk about this site being a "Fur Home", and I find out a member does not even have a home. Living in winters going way below freezing even in the day, with no heat. I remember the emotions that brought up in me, and how much I wished that we could somehow help, but the only way we could help was to provide the poor fellow with some relief in his difficult life. I am sure we have other members like this. (The member mentioned still comes here now and then and I am extremely glad, even proud, that he does!) There are so many people in the world who have to live like this. I do believe that this has a real impact right now.

EW, your comment is exactly what we like to hear. No one should feel that they have to post here, or Mikhail's for instance, or any of the fur sites. But, if one and all would just post when they see a new topic that they think is indeed interesting to them, then this place would rock. If each person who comes to any of these forum sites right now would do that, I truly believe that each of us would be so unbelievably surprised on the huge number of posts per day.

Samurman, I agree that the old posts in our Archives have so much to offer. It is interesting seeing the brand new topics that had never before came up when the site was brand new. Seeing how the topics and participation of members developed. That is a jewel that is so underused and under appreciated here. Indeed forgotten by everyone here. And you can count me in that list! And as you mention, the number of Ebay posts points to the root of this exactly. Something new draws participation.

In short, Samurman, I am glad you love this place as you say. We truly hope others do too, and we will certainly welcome any changes and/or suggestions to make it more of a home to you. And everyone - new members and old - please remember that if you would post on the forum when you feel that urge, and everyone else did the same - you would not even recognize this place it would be so much more fun. For me yes. For Samurman, ew, Unclejoe, and Brandy yes, but indeed for each and everyone reading this as well.

Thanks to all who have posted here. I hope we hear more comments. Hope we see more posts soon. And would love to have suggestions on how we can make this place even better!

Hello everyone,

unfortunately I can only express my thoughts in easy words as I´m no native speaker; so I hope less words can also be meaningful -

I myself has started as a lurker only and after about one year in this forum, lurking in the fur world for almost 10 years was my first post since the proper thing hit my heart - not only that I was not afraid to post any longer ("coming out"), but I felt that I can really discuss with people here. I was not only one of a bunch.

But I totally have to agree that new people with new thoughts bring this place to new things to discuss - I remember, when no brandy was at the site; now it is much more interesting, isn´t it

So as a conclusion: the lurkers have there right to come out when they want, the people here are REALLY great and sometimes some people just do not have the time or proper things to post.

I never fault a person who does not read and write English well.

I took introductory Spanish in high school.

Since I live less then 50 miles south of the US/Canadian border, I occasionally meet people who speak French Canadian. (Quebecois, if you will. People from Quebec often don't like to be called "French.")

I traveled in Europe and spent some time in Italy so, due to my Spanish lessons in school, I was able to pick up a few words of Italian.

But, alas, it's been more than 20 years since I have had the chance to speak foreign languages and I have forgotten most of them.

The good news is that, because I am a cinema projectionist, I often get to watch foreign movies with English subtitles. If you pay attention, it is possible to pick up a few words. It's no way to learn a language but it is the only practice I get, these days.

The fact that you can come to a website where 95% of the members are English speakers and fit in as well as you do speaks volumes about your English-speaking ability!

I could not do one-tenth as well on a German speaking website!

Zaphod...

Don't worry one bit about language here. You speak English far, far better than I will ever be able to speak your language!

We are always glad to hear from you!

Sorry.. I've been 'out of work' for a couple of months, so I've been spending more time 'looking for work' than anything else. The only exception was the recent release for something new on the XBox. Otherwise, I've been stopping by but I haven't spent much time here.

I can understand what you mean, Kappa - being out of work sucks.. But at least now I have a few things that keep me going - my bass playing (which is going rather well), and my brand new black fox headband with attached tails!! hehehe

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, that wasn't planned... 2 days after I post the whole internet connection just cuts off and I can't even lurk

After 2 weeks of fighting with the phone company tech support (...your modem is obsolite; we'll send out a new one...the modem didn't arrive, you're the 3rd person to call with that problem today; I'll put in to overnight another... new modem doesn't work; engineers say that there is an outage in your area as of 20 min ago...), had to switch providers.

Now that everything is working again; I can go back to lurking with occasional posts.

EW...

Hope it is more "with occasional posts" than "Lurking". We always love to hear from you.

Sorry for all of the problems you have had, but hope all is ok now. Especially sorry that just the day that you got back, our site is going down for 45 minutes. Isn't that the way things happen eh?

White,

No issues with having to deal with the update- I had to work. I just haven't wanted to try and see if this site will get past the internet filters/blocks on our network there.

White Fox and all...

been lurking (briefly visiting)on occasion but have been very busy as usual....

I finally met someone in late August to spend quality time with for one, and this new chapter in my life might really go places and further open doors to other friendships. My new friend (which I anticipate will become more than that as the relationship continues to grow) seems to be surprisingly more receptive to the warmth and touch of fur that I ever could have imagined, so there may be some very positive experiences to share in the near future as time permits. I sure hope everyone enjoys the holiday season....take care......

Commiserations to Kappa Congratulations to ticklefur

Personally, I've started a new job which has been keeping me ridiculously busy, so my time here has been very limited.

Are we running out of new things to talk about on here? Or is the number of members dropping?
