elbas3175
Hi All, Is it really -10C to -20C in Montreal and Toronto at the moment? And yet White Fox says there are very few furs on show in Canada - how is this possible?! I'm going over there on holiday in a few weeks' time and I was looking forward to a feast of fur - am I going to be disappointed?
coyoterod
Being an avid fur wearer and living in Montreal I have found over the years that the chance of seeing either a man or woman in fur of any type has become a rare sighting. The weather for the next week is ngoing to be between -25 to -30 celcius before the wind chill is added. Women today do not wear fur for warmth but for show. When the temperature is around 0C or 32F you will more than likely see far more fur as they do not have to wrap themselves up. Anyway, if you are visiting make sure you wear yours so that the people will see how great wearing fur can be.Enjoy your visit to Canada.
elbas3175
Sorry, are you saying there are more or fewer furs when it's 0C/32F? Why would there be more fur when they don't have to wrap themselves up? Why is it that there are generally so few furs worn in Montreal? It's one of the major wholesale and retail cities and it clearly gets very, very cold! I would have thought it was more a necessity than a luxury in that kind of weather. White Fox
Elbas Where I am it does not get that cold so I cannot give you ideas on whether it is cold or hot. I've noticed in North America that certain cities are "Fur cities". However, for some reason few seem to be in Canada. There do seem to be quite a few in Ottawa. I've not been in Quebec city much, but it seems fairly good the few times that I have been there. Montreal as mentioned seems very low on list of fur wearers though again, I am seldom there. With gov't offices in Ottawa, I think there are more secretaries, and thus gals have a little more money on the average to spend on nice clothes for instance. I've not been in Montreal much, but I would put Toronto on the middle to low end of fur wearing. Many other smaller cities, even lower. It also of course depends on your life style, as theater and museum goers see far, far more furs than shoppers if you catch my drift. You will see a few more at 7:30 am and 5 pm when secretaires are heading home from work, etc. I do think that it will come back just as it is doing in England. Many times women have said to me "After seeing how nice you look in that coat, I think I will go home and dig out mine and wear it!" The desire is there. It just seems that certain groups had a psychological impact here on many folks more than even we as citizens realized at the time, and it is taking time to fight that. But, fight we will. coyoterod
To explain what I stated regarding the warmer temperature, more women will be out in fur than when it is freezing. When it's freezing everyone is either in sheepskin, down, or some type of Arctic wear that is good for 100 below 0. As one of our prominent female furriers stated last year, "Fewer people dress up to go out today and they figure that a fur is to much". I challenge all of us to take a good look around us when we are out and see what most people are wearing - sweat pants and running shoes. If we could dress anymore down .... I digress. Ever wonder why you see more Europeans in furs, this is due to the fact that they still have an interest in how they look and are trying not to be to North American. One of my good friends is a furrier who does not sell new coats but remodels them. He has been very busy lately with some customers remodeling 2,3,4 coats at a time to be in style. I asked him where these people live and found that most live outside city centers. My wife and I wear our coats everytime we have a chance whether shopping during the day, walking in the hood or going out for dinner - no holds barred. I have even had my picture taken when I was out on a snowy saturday morning shopping by someone who must be interested in fur - imagine my surprise. You can find it on the Fur Fashion site in the Men in Fur section. As I said before, enjoy your visit and be on the look out for fur.
