Fur report from London/South East - Saturday 7th February

All,

A few weeks since my last update so here's a new report of my fur sightings over the past fortnight or so. The usual milder wetter weather returned in mid January but the arctic cold came back to the UK early last week with some very heavy snowfall and more snow due over the coming days. Some of you outside the UK may have read about our national inability to cope with these conditions; those of you within the UK can't have missed the vast press coverage of the whiteout!

While I've been mostly based in Brighton and Hove again I have had a couple of trips to various parts of London to visit my furrier, see friends and family and also to collect a mink coat that I bought in a private sale. Quite a few younger women still out and about locally and in London in coney box jackets and vintage mink/musquash jackets and strollers but I've not seen any long minks for a while. As some of you may have read elsewhere, my furrier had some fabulous items in as a result of a liquidation sale from a couple who had lost a fortune in the recent Madoff scandal. This wonderful range of furs included gorgeous as-new coats and jackets in chinchilla, sable, lynx and mink from well known labels at incredibly good prices, albeit mostly out of my price range - and I was too long in mulling over buying the sable jacket as it was sold during the two days while I pondered! I will see what he has left later this week though. The mink coat purchase was a nice eBay find and I was able to go and collect the coat in person from a lovely English blonde woman, who wore the coat to meet me which was delightful!

Here are the other highlights of my fur sightings recently:

- a glamourous middle aged English blonde woman wearing a gorgeous blue fox coat in New Bond Street. I complimented her on her coat for which she thanked me and we chatted for a few moments afterwards.

- a lovely young American brunette woman trying on a vintage dark brown mink long jacket in my furrier; she jokingly asked me to buy it for her!

- a petite pretty young oriental woman trying on a range of sable and mink jackets in my furrier.

- an young English blonde woman wearing a red fox jacket in my furrier picking up furs from repairs.

- a younger blonde woman wearing a greyish beaver jacket with beige fox collar and cuffs in Twickenham.

- a striking middle aged Italian brunette wearing a raccoon jacket in Regent Street.

- an older English blonde woman wearing a silver fox coat in Oxford Street.

- a middle aged brunette woman wearing a coyote coat in M&S on Oxford Street.

- a younger German blonde woman wearing a sapphire grey mink jacket, with an older German blonde woman wearing a black knitted mink long jacket in Oxford Street.

- a younger continental brunette woman wearing a lovely brown sable jacket in New Bond Street.

- a young pretty blonde woman wearing a white hooded coney jacket with black flecks in Oxford Street.

Hopefully this week's cold snap will bring some more sightings too!

Regards,

Mr Mockle

I must have missed this news, so Mr Mockle, could you please enlighten us as to which furrier holds the great honor of being the "official furriers to Mr. Mockle"? Gale Furs? Hockley?

Samurman,

Well there isn't really one official furriers as I source my furs from a variety of places. As to my main furrier I have mentioned them in a few posts over the years so keep on searching - but rather than go on about them again I can tell you privately if you wish. If you or others want to go them drop me a line and I'll go with you to introduce you, which might save you a bit on anything you buy rather than making a cold-call yourself. I did pop back there today and sadly all of those special chinchillas and sables and most of those lynxes and minks had been sold; that didn't stop me picking up a lovely crystal fox jacket though, one of the best foxes they've had in for a while.

Regards,

Mr Mockle

*Hopefully*, not so sadly, we might see some appearances of them on streets of London if they've gone to good homes

All,

Well I think we're now done with winter here in the south of the UK although the evenings are staying cool especially when the wind picks up. But even though it's been milder I've still seen a few furs on trips to London and a handful down here on the coast too. I've also had a couple of trips back to my London furrier, going once with another fur fan - Samurman - for his first visit and I had a good time meeting and chatting with him too. Sadly almost all of those liquidation furs have been sold but I picked up a lovely crystal fox jacket and was tempted by another mink or two but decided to wait to see what else comes along for next time.

Sighting highlights from the last two weeks include:

- a young continental blonde woman wearing a black coney jacket in Hove, who smiled and thanked me as I complimented her on her jacket.

- a glamourous older English blonde wearing a brown mink jacket in Victoria station; I complimented her on her jacket, she smiled and we chatted briefly but sadly I had a train to catch.

- a pretty young brunette woman wearing a cream coney bomber jacket around Brighton mall.

- a young blonde woman wearing a gray fox jacket in Bank station.

- a glamourous middle aged continental red haired woman wearing a short brown mink jacket on Tottenham Court Road.

- a glamourous middle aged Italian brunette wearing a long sable gillet on Oxford Street.

- a pretty young blonde woman wearing an olive green coney jacket on Oxford Street.

- a pretty young American brunette woman wearing a natural (beige) coney jacket on Oxford Circus.

- a young Japanese woman wearing a white and grey coney jacket on Oxford Street.

- a younger brunette woman wearing a silver/grey coney 3/4 coat on Oxford Street.

- a young English brunette woman wearing a brown coney jacket in Chalk Farm station.

- another young brunette woman wearing a brown mink jacket around Chalk Farm station.

Might be that last of the updates for a while as Spring approaches, but you never know!

Mr Mockle

Samurman,

My apologies; I did mention you in the first paragraph but did not make reference to the rather fullsome coyote 3/4 coat you wore that day.

Just joking:) How about this:

- A handsome, well-built guy, smiling broadly in his rather fullsome coyote 3/4 coat.

Well, maybe I should take a picture of mine and the above description to an ad agency, to show them how mere words (aided by furs, of course!) transform an ordinary person to something extraordinary... Maybe they will hire me as copywriter!

All,

A further quick update on this theme. Although we've had much wetter and milder - even warm - weather in the south east over the last few weeks, I am still seeing a few furs out and about in London and in and around Brighton. Nothing to compare to the quality or quantity of the December through February sightings but hardly a day has gone by when on a trip out I haven't seen at least one or two furs being worn. These are usually cheaper coney or musquash jackets but I did see a striking younger English blonde woman wearing a red fox piece jacket in Victoria station on Sunday; of course I had to stop her and compliment her on her jacket. And on Ms Mockle's last visit she braved the night chill in a brown mink jacket and, one evening, in my vintage chinchilla jacket.

Might be tempting fate, but seems like fur season shows no signs of ending down here just yet!

Regards,

Mr Mockle

All,

Fur season limps on here in the UK! A few quiet weeks of fur spotting but three sights this extended weekend: two young brunette women wearing coney jackets around Victoria station on Good Friday and a Japanese woman was wearing a brown mink jacket around Brighton mall this morning despite some delightfully warm spring weather.

ReFur,

This winter has been a bit different to my normal ones but certainly I believe that I have seen more furs being worn in the southern UK since late November alone than I have seen in total over the past six or seven years. I think it's due to several factors, including the unusually cold and dry winter, an increase in celebrity fur wearers, a change in the population demographic (more Eastern European and Oriental residents), a shift in public attitude and acceptance of fur and my more abundant free time to get out and see people wearing them. As stated in this and previous topics on the theme, in recent winters I might see at most 20 to 30 full furs throughout the autumn and winter but this season I had a few days where I saw between 40 and 60 furs - and I don't include fake furs or real fur trims on hoods, jackets or capes among my totals either but both of those sorts of items have been far more popular too. As pleasing as the increasing number of furs being spotted has been an increase in younger women wearing furs; many in trendy coney box jackets picked up cheaply for the season but a few in more lavish furs too. Traditionally, my previous winter fur sightings were nearly always older tourists in longer minks and while they are still around (and in greater numbers) it is wonderful to see younger women and students wrapping up warm too, including many British nationals too.

I doubt I'll see many more until the late autumn now but I have been continually and pleasing surprised for a few weeks by occasional unexpected sightings - so who knows!

Regards,

Mr Mockle

Linda and all,

The reports may be carrying on for the time being at least. Despite it being a mild but humid day yesterday, I saw a young woman out in Brighton wearing a lovely mink jacket and had a nice if brief chat with her too. Another lovely and unexpected surprise sighting!

Regards,

Mr Mockle
