White Fox
I've been thinking here about a possible project, but if I do this alone it is of little use. If everyone here worked together on this I think it could be a good idea. The thought is to look at some of the web sites on the web (in our links?), and analyze them. Explain what is wrong. Tell what is right. Maybe we could pick some good ones and tell why they are especially good. The gold star sites would be a good start, but maybe there are sites you think should have had a god star, and others you think should not have. Maybe we could explain why the best is the best. Maybe pick some in the middle and even the worst ones. It becomes very obvious looking at some sites that many furriers just do not understand web sites. They turn the project over to "Someone else who does", and you get the sites like some obviously made by a student with all sorts of flashy video that misses the point completely and takes five minutes to load if you have high speed service. Or you get thirty sites that all look the same. Or try to do it themselves, and land up with a site that costs them money, yet brings them almost no benefit. They know they need a web site but don't know how to do it. The horse and cart driver just does not understand the control panel of the space shuttle. Yet, put that astronaut on the horse and be ready for a disturbing ride! Maybe if we could do a good job on this people like Kostas could show the link to the site where we do this around a bit and some furriers might even see it and use it as a bit of help on improving their web sites. Maybe we could actually help our the industry by doing this. BUT This cannot be me alone doing this. JG, FRBrGr, OFF, and I have rated most of the sites on our links area, but most were rated by only one of us as that area is so massive. If we were to do this it would mean many members here working together to come up with a page that is really good. I often remember how I mentioned how one furrier's web site I found to be so bad that it would make me want to not go to that store, while Worker 11811 replied that he found the site good. If we do this, we need to all work together on the project. Would anyone else like to try this? I am not looking for good and bad comments on individual sites yet. We would need a separate thread for that and some ideas on how to go about it. But, I am looking for thoughts on whether this project might work, or if it might just be too massive for us. If the idea is workable we could use a forum to discuss it while we build the suggestion site on our wiki. Anyone can make suggestions without knowing wiki. And again, maybe some furriers could actually use the ideas that we come up with to build better sites. All the way from colours that work and don't work to use of video, to font style to content to wording, etc... Thoughts anyone? W
MrMockle
W, A good idea and I'm sure that we all have preferences and opinions. One thing that often irks me about websites more than the slow load times of large size flash applets or videos is the use of sound - which should in my opinion always be an optional extra which a user must select rather than automatically playing as the site loads. Some of you will have had moments when browsing sites in public cyber cafes, libraries or student study rooms when such outbursts from PCs are at best surprising and at worst possibly embarassing! I've actually just redesigned my own website which is simple, minimalistic and self-coded, even if I've yet to examine how it looks on many browsers. All respectful comments, suggestions and criticism are welcome! http://www.mrmockle.com/ Regards, Mr Mockle
Worker 11811
I think it's great! It's very clean. It is clear and concise. It gets to the point. I like the white background. Perhaps the only thing I could suggest is a logo.
FrBrGr
Congratulations, Mr M, on a job well done!! " title="Applause" /> I love the way you have organized your gallery (are their some pics in there that you didn't have on your original site?) but I also appreciate the text portion. We've been friends for many years, but I've learned some things about you that I didn't know before. I really appreciate the personal touch. It gives the gallery portion so much more meaning. MrMockle
Worker and FrBrGr, Thanks guys but it's still somewhat work in progress. I'm still experiementing with Photoshop and in time plan to add little corner images in the top right and bottom left corners, not logos as such but a different image for each page. More important things to work on first! Regards, Mr Mockle
