Please allow myself to introduce...myself.

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am 28, currently residing in the desert southwest. To my chagrin, the temperature outside is at 76 at after 10pm. I have 4 furs waiting for me in my room.

They are all identical faux hooded furs, XL for my 6 foot frame, from Burlington coat factory.

Living with roommates has made me learn enough stealth tactics that I could make James Bond seem like a pink elephant at the mall.

My story should come as no surprise; my parents had a giant faux fur blanket when I was a kid. Thing (for lack of a better term) snowballed from there.

Pleased to meet you all.

I love it!

It is natural for humans to seek tactile gratification. To love fur is not abnormal.

It is the people who can successfully cope with their drive for gratification via fur (or any other thing) who are the healthiest ones. The people who would seek to suppress others are the ones who are in the wrong!

Welcome to the Fur Den, furvor! Please let me apologize for Vince - sometimes people need to show a bit more respect. I think most of the folks you'll meet here do prefur real furs over faux, even those many of us - me included - have a faux fur or two in our collections. Living in what isn't the best fur climate can be something of a challenge - here in Florida, it's in the 70s as I type this. I took my better fur coats in for storage over a week ago. At least that's one advantage to faux - you don't have to worry about putting them in storage. Hopefully, you'll find your own place one of these days and will be free to enjoy your furs anytime, anywhere in your home... Of course, it might even better find some new roommates who are into fur!

Welcome to the Den!

I own several faux furs myself -- 2 throws, 2 jackets, and 3 coats. I find faux fur purrfect for chilly weather (~32 to ~48 F). The jackets have been out and about quite a bit the past month. I'm sprawled under my faux sable throw as I type this.

Yeah...I'm in them as I type. It's a pain in the @$$ sometimes, but I can't do anything about it.

Or wish to.

BTW, Burlington only has what satisfies me. The brand is "Tally-ho outerwear." anyone familiar?

I apologize for my manners...thank you for the warm welcome.

Dude, you're not the one whose manners are slipping.

We're glad you're here!

I've got no problem with faux fur. Neither do most of my Bears. All 1,000 of them!

No, I'm not kidding! I said, 1,000!

I've got Bears made from faux fur, which we collectors like to call "plush" and I've got some real fur Bears too. We also have a lot of Bears made from mohair and alpaca wool. Natural fiber woven into plush.

When it comes to fur that I want to wear and play with I do much prefer the real McCoy but there are times and places when faux is acceptable and even preferable. If the fur would see undue wear or would easily get dirty it might make sense to use faux. Otherwise you might spend a lot of money cleaning and replacing the fur. If faux is used it is easier to clean. Many times it can be laundered if you're careful. You can't do that with real fur.

In the bedroom, it's a different story. No comparison! If you think faux fur is great in bed, the real thing will cross your eyes!

If you haven't tried it you should!

In my opinion faux fur quality has improved substantially in the past few years. I wore one of my faux fur jackets to McDonalds tonight (of all places -- I was running around town and thirsty and in the mood for iced tea). One of the employees, an older gentleman who appeared to be native American, complimented my jacket and then surprised me by guessing (correctly) that it was "coyote". Cha-ching. I think the jacket looks reasonably "real" with its rich color and soft, shimmering, extra fine "hairs" ... But it's always good to hear an affirming second opinion.

I agree with that. You also have 1,000 Teddy Bears all nodding at you in unison.

There are various and sundry grades of synthetic plushes out there. But the far-and-away best are the mohair and alpaca plushes.

If you get a good grade of alpaca plush it is very soft and it is surface washable. You don't want to soak it in the washing machine but it is hand washable if you are careful not to soak it in too much water. (Basically surface wash.)

Reinhard Schulte makes the best mohair plush you can get. That is what Steiff Teddy Bears are all made from. (Steiff actually has financial interest in the company.)

You can buy Shchulte mohair by the yard if you like. It ain't cheap... Some of it can be over $100 per yard! Expensive!... But NICE!

I can't imagine living with 1000 bears ... It's difficult enough living with 2 willful felines. You're a braver man than I.

Hi Furvor!

Welcome to The Fur Den!

I am not around much these days, so my welcome is a little late.

Hope you enjoy the Fur Den as much as I have... and hope to again!

One thing I have found, you get as much out of something as you put into it. By starting to post you have taken the first step in helping this site to be a greater place. Each post creates a synergy; others then reconsider their thoughts on issues and post in kind.

Hope to continue to hear from you!

Linda
