The advantage of furs, over any other fibers or clothing material, is it lasts longer. It can last 40, 50 years if it's well maintained.

So maybe my silver fox has another 30 years left?

Another one that is common is we can make a fur liner into a leather jacket so people get the warmth.

OFF says, "Been there, done that."

The one caveat to what was quoted is that more recently pelts tend to be fleshed (scraped) thinner during the tanning process to reduce the weight of the finished garment. This thinning of the leather allows the leather to dry out and disintegrate much much faster that furs from 20 years ago.

I agree with you AK and it is something one should take care of when purchasing a custom fur. Have the furrier order hides that are not so vigorously scrapped.

This is also one of the advantages I've discovered getting older furs off eBay for my remodels. The hides are almost always thicker, especially older Beavers.

That is a trend I was recently made aware of. I was at a friends salon and he explained the reason for that is women to be precise, want the over-all weight to be lighter. So, that is where this came about. It is true, with a thicker skin, the pelts and furs will last longer. Sadly, it's becoming popular to 'not' do that anymore..
