Lil Dragonfly
A while ago someone started a thread asking what chinchilla orylag is. Can't find it now. I found this useful description on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Yds-Beautiful-Chinchilla-Orilack-Fur-Trim-Boa_W0QQitemZ300373398625QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45efa65461 "Chinchilla orilack is a crossbreed of chinchilla and rabbit and is plush, the same coloring as chinchilla but the fur is not as long. It is NOT rex rabbit!" Now we know
Worker 11811
I don't think it is possible for chinchilla and rabbits to interbreed. They aren't in the same genus or species. The taxonomic classification of two animals has to be the same down to the genus level before they can interbreed. (Most of the time.) Rabbits are: Animalia > Vertebrata > Mammalia > Lagomorpha > Leporidae > [genus] > [species] Chinchilla are: Animalia > Vertebrata > Mammalia > Rodentia > Chinchillidae > [genus] > [species] Chinchilla and rabbits are in completely different order, not even the same family, genus or species. Therefore I don't think they are genetically similar enough to produce offspring. I think "Orylag" is just another name for a type of fancy rabbit. Guest
Orylag is another type of rabbit. It's known by the more common name rex rabbit. There is a seller on eBay, a furrier in downtown Los Angeles, who sells orylag as chinchilla without mentioning that orylag is rabbit. I think some members here know who I am talking about. His first name is Daniel. Last name starts with a W. Tricia
Worker 11811
I got a little streak of $hit-disturber in me, this afternoon. I sent the seller a message: Dear mits3gt, Chinchilla and rabbits can not interbreed. This fur can not be a crossbreed between a rabbit and a chinchilla. There is a breed of rabbit which produces fur which looks virtually identical to chinchilla. "Rex Chinchilla" is very nice fur! Are you sure this is not Rex Chinchilla Rabbit? This is the answer I received: I was told by my supplier, a furrier from Greece, that it was a crossbreed between rabbit and chinchilla. I don't see why the two could not be interbred, they are very much alike. I haven't answered yet. I don't think I will because I just don't want to cause too much trouble. I already know what I need to know. However, I still have this itching desire to send her a message that says, "I happen to KNOW a furrier from Greece who would tell you that the fur comes from a rabbit." But I don't think I want to stir up too much trouble, lest the fit hits the shan!

ROBINFUR
Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I have shared in any conversation here at the Den. This time though, I definitely feel it is necessary to impart information that perhaps could be useful for all concerning rex rabbit fur. First off, to let everyone know that I am not just talking out the side of my face, I have put my two cents into the pot so-to-speak when it came to buying rex rabbit fur over the last five years or so. I managed to amass quite a few rex rabbit garments. I have rounded out my fur stash with single pelts, plates (usually containing a minimum of 24 rex rabbit pelts sewn together), rex hats, vests, jackets, capes, and stoles. I am now in the process of hand sewing my very own rex pants that will have both fur inside and outside. I intend on making my own rex rabbit bedspread to fit a California king bed too. The only things after that I would like to acquire, will be a pair of rex rabbit mittens from Minkglove.com and possibly a full length rex rabbit coat. I have found that this fur is so versatile versus chinchilla and I really don't give a hoot if some folks think it isn't as pretty. I love the stuff because the fur it isn't so dainty and the hides are far superior so as to last me pretty much for my lifetime. If a person took their time looking, pelt prices can run as low as $8.00 U.S. for each (...try that one on for size for chinchilla). Also, I have found furriers to be pretty receptive to making rex rabbit garments to special order and in any color variation (if the pelts are available). So having a brown or burgundy colored rex rabbit garment can be an option over the basic gray chinchilla color, which I think could prove to be very appealing to some people. I personally have have had no trouble throughout the last few years literally sucking up the good stuff on eBay for about a quarter to a third of the cost over buying full price new garments at local furriers. A lot of times seller just don't want to keep their jackets and stuff, so they let 'em go for next to nothing. I have got some pretty good items to prove it and saved a ton of dough in the process. I had one Canadian furrier (who sells on Ebay), make for me a specially designed jacket in an oversized mens 50 and tailored it for what I call the 'rex rabbit jacket to beat all jackets'. It is rex rabbit inside and outside will full hood and elastized sleeve ends. There are probably over 100 pelts plus in the jacket and it cost me $1,400 bucks to make. That same jacket would have run $3000 or better anywhere else. I doubt he would charge that low of price again, but it was quite a good deal for me at the time. I love that jacket, it says to me 'man fur' all over it and feels like heaven. I know there are folks who won't give a hoot about all this, because chinchilla is such a turn on for them and would never consider rex rabbit as an alternative. I know.. I have heard all the reasons, like it looks cheap or the gangsta wrappers wear it, or it's not as soft and fluffy or what ever. Ok, well if a person likes paying up the yang for chinchilla, then great! Better not get a rip in that fluffy stuff, because it will cost an arm and a leg to repair. Not to mention as chinchilla ages, it YELLOWS OUT and SHEDS like mad. Once the pelts dry out too, yikes... better look out, it's going to be rip city time. Those pelts just don't have enough give, and yes sir... they are paper thin to begin with! Now for Orylag... the most important point to know and remember is, Orylag is rex rabbit but not all rex rabbit is Orylag!!! What did I just say? Hmmm.... It's time we all get clued in folks.. Orylag is a 'branded and registered trademark' term used exclusively by the French fur industry, that produce rex rabbit pelts that have been genetically engineered for greater fur density. That fur is not crossed with chinchilla either, so let's get it right! Orylag branded rex rabbit has 8 to 10,000 hairs per cm squared, and is therefore more dense than typical farm raised rex rabbit. Orylag is exclusively licensed by the Orylag Breeders Cooperative in France, and if anyone here doubts what I say, then they should visit this website for the truth of the matter: http://www.orylag.com and get the real facts. I think its fine that garmnet makers sell items they say are rex rabbit or rex chinchilla, I have no problem telling the difference between rex rabbit and chinchilla myself, but not everyone can tell that difference. So its prudent to be careful and be truthful to the buying public whenever possible. As for the term Orylag, no one should be using that term with rex rabbit in a sales scenerio unless they mean business and are absolutely certain it is true branded Orylag pelts in their garments. To coin a like-minded phrase here, It would be like saying California sparkling wine is Champagne, and it just isn't so! There you have it and my best to all at the Den! -Robinfur
Worker 11811
I'm with you. I think rex rabbit is very nice. When people say rex is "poor man's chinchilla" they are underselling just how nice it really is. I think a lot of people look at rex as inferior and it just isn't so. The only time when I don't like to see rex rabbit is when people try to pass it off as real chinchilla. I thought it was a type of "fancy" rabbit fur but I did not know that Orylag was a subtype of rex rabbit. I'm glad to know this.

Zaphod_bee
Wow, I must truly say that I´m sooo with you !! You can have a look at my former post that I am the same fan of rex rabbit than you are. But you seem to have a much broader collection !! I would definitely like to have some of the double-sided stuff you have ! My double sided dress is very nice as well as my single-sided overall. Although I got a nice price too, I have not made such bargains like you have described. I´m also looking forward to some pictures of your collection Zaphod_bee
JGalanos
Orylag is rex rabbit but not all rex rabbit is Orylag!!! Good summary! I'm not a fan of wegular wabbit (cheap looking and sheds way too much in my book) ... But I would consider purchasing a wex wabbit garment. I've run across a few nice ones. ReFur
Robininfur. I agree with you wholeheartedly! I worked with a furrier who replaced a client's Chinchilla trim year-after-year. He finally convinced her to use Rex instead. Rex is a wonderful fur. I have not seen the Orylag to know the difference between the French Rex and the regular breed, but it would be interesting to see and touch. Sounds like you have a nice collection! Thanks for the info and so nice to hear from you!
