auzmink
Has it ever struck anyone as odd as to where all those pelts go that we see at the auction houses?? Clearly they go into coat / jacket / etc production, but if Pirelli make 4 tyres, we see a car on the road. Wherever I go, I don't see a mink coat, or a sable coat that often. I remember a story about the Chinese keeping some pelts back last year as a form of currency trading, but not surely for the past 20 years. What I see on the photos is hundreds of pelts, what I see on the streets doesn't reflect that number. Just where are all these pelts hiding Is it that people buy these wonderful garments and then NEVER wear them in public? Do people buy them to use only at home? What has happened to all those great old coats seen in the magazines of the 80's, those great huge Grosvenor coats...are they just sitting in storage????? We need to free them into the public domain... Oh well, just a thought. Auzmink
grouchomg
What I see on the photos is hundreds of pelts, what I see on the streets doesn't reflect that number. Just where are all these pelts hiding I wonder the same thing, but let me take it a bit further. When I walk into the local furrier, I see several hundred furs, and they tell me that their business is very good and getting better. (In fact, they plan to expand their space over the summer.) Yet, I see perhaps a dozen fur-clad people all winter in this small city where I work and play. Part of the answer - perhaps a large part - is that furs are viewed as "special", only to be worn on significant occasions, for the ultimate dress up. I work with people like that. As for the rest, I don't know. For me, fur is everyday wear during the winter and at home. I like lounging about in a long coyote or fox with a glass of wine and a good book. And I too miss the voluptuous coats of the 80s. TyG
JGalanos
Has it ever struck anyone as odd as to where all those pelts go that we see at the auction houses?? Excellent question! I think China is a major player in the pelts market these days. I wonder how many of the "Made in China" coats are actually "sold in China"? White Fox
I find it so strange when I hear someone say "I only wore the coat twice this winter". Or hear a furrier talk of people saying that. I can hardly believe that mentality yet it is out there big time! Are they afraid to wear fur? Are they saving it for better occasions? No idea. but it sure is frustrating! I can hardly believe that mentality yet it is out there big time! Are they afraid to wear fur? Are they saving it for better occasions? No idea. but it sure is frustrating! That was me when I bought my first fur -- The coat (silver fox) was for special occasions only (attending the theater, shopping the Magnificent Mile, and other "semi-ritzy" occasions). I've mellowed over the years and over the past decade while that coat has continued to grace theaters and high end retail it has also been to the grocery store, the convenience store, and Chipotle. "Where would I wear it?" is something I've heard women say when contemplating purchasing a fur. I think many women still think, as I did initially, that fur is only for special/formal occasions (which can result in that "only wore the coat twice this winter" phenomenon). mailonfurs
Has it ever struck anyone as odd as to where all those pelts go that we see at the auction houses?? Excellent question! I think China is a major player in the pelts market these days. I wonder how many of the "Made in China" coats are actually "sold in China"? The prices on pelts on the latest auctions went 60% up or more. Thats because of the great demand in China and their local market. It seems that all those millions of pelts are sold inside China, and many of these are also ending to Russia.

MAINLYMINK
I believe there is a ton of money inside China these days -- I just recently saw an article (with pictures) about the wedding of a wealthy Chinese tycoon's son (father a coal mine owner, apparently): there was a of Bentleys and Rolls Royces, headed up by a couple of Lamborghinis and a Ferrari or two! The Lambos were both pearl-white, matching Galliardos, I think, for bride and groom...imagine the money available for FURS, then...
