The commercial that started it all?

Now that I think about it, I distinctly remember mid-80s furrier commercials from my childhood. I grew up not too far from Flemington, New Jersey, and this ad must have been run on TV in my area. Excuse my shameless plug, but Flemington Furs was, and is, the best of the best without question. I've been a customer going on ten years now...ever since before I could afford it! With the most recent recession, they still manage to stay open and roll out the red carpet for ALL their customers, regardless of their means. The group of people working there comprise one of the most knowledgeable and fur-loving staffs in the world, and they also own a fur consignment shop across the parking lot.

Have any of you got my-first-furrier or fur-commercial stories to share?

Joe and all,

Although my fur admiring began through other sources - as many of you will have seen or read in previous posts here or on my own website - it wasn't too long before I started noticing newspaper adverts for furriers, furs in mail-order catalogues and a few furrier commercials here in the UK during the mid 80s. I still have a few of those newspaper cutings from Konrad Furs, The Fur House and Cyril Kaye - nearly all featuring stunningly glamourous brunettes smouldering in thick fox coats (mostly probably silver foxes) and certainly a huge inspiration which eventually lead to me doing my own shoots. Only one tv commercial stands out - a Konrad furs one which I can't honestly recall the images but I do strongly remember the lyrics and song so I must have watched it many times back then.

My early furrier trips were very nervous affairs but the very first visit at the age of 18 or so lead to me buying two cheap fox jackets found on a sale rail for £50 each then: a blue fox jacket and an afghan (orangey-red) fox jacket. I was somewhat distracted while selecting them by the glamourous brunette Jewish lady trying on black mink coats, one trimmed in silver fox was truly breathtaking. A few more trips followed after that but I didn't find anything so well priced, although did make an early visit to a furrier who eventually became my regular one, and from whom I've bought many furs over the years.

Regards,

Mr Mockle

Where have all the fur ads gone?

The Boston Globe once regularly had adverts in their Sunday magazine for Kakas, IJ Fox, and the American Fur Company. Fox is still around, but I haven't seen a fur ad in the Boston or local Sunday paper in a long time.

OMG - I remember that commercial all too well! I grew up in central NJ - not very far from Flemington Furs either. It is easily one of the finest fur shops out there. If you haven't gone, you ought it to yourself to take a trip if you're in the NJ/NYC even Philadelphia area.

Flemington had a huge selection of beautiful women's furs when I was there ~4 years ago. The men's selection was so-so.

The commercials "To remember" of course were Dittrich Furs (Detroit) with the women riding horses and skiing in fur coats. I don't think any others probably ever really matched those.

My first furrier experience was at The Fur Vault at Alexander's department store in New York. They had a men's fur department with the coat inventory on the floor (versus hidden in a vault) and I was able to try on all the furs. I tried on opossum-lined raincoats, raccoon coats, mink coats, and other furs for like two hours. I was in heaven. Later in the week I went to the district and tried on men's coyote, raccoon, and fox coats at Brothers II. The coats at Brothers II were higher quality and more stylish than the coats at Alexander's ... I was in heaven squared that day.

  • 3 weeks later...

I remember seeing a commercial with at least eight beautiful ladies arm in arm walking up stairs to a large building. They all wore full length fur coats except the lady in the center. She flaunted a huge red fox fur poncho with tails. Drove me crazy with desire!
