furpunk2
SONJA HENIE Norwegian-born Sonja Henie was the invincible ice-skater who turned actress. World champion ten times in consecutive years and three times Olympic gold medallist she abandoned the sport for a crack at Hollywood. She couldn`t act her way out of a paper bag but her engaging smile and unsurpassed skating ability led to starring roles in a dozen movies , mostly ice-dance musicals , and for a long time she was "an item" with Tyrone Power. When she retired form the silver screen she took a series of spectacular ice-dance shows on the road and made a fortune estimated at over $50million. furpunk2
JOAN COLLINS I owe a real big debt to Joan Collins so I feel slightly guilty about labelling her as an Oldie (even if she is 73). Up to the age of 17 opportunities to indulge my secret passion for fur were pretty limited to say the least , but then I left home to go to college - and Dynasty hit the TV screens of the unsuspecting British public. The rest , as they say , is history. Most of these , I hope and expect , will be familiar to you but with a bit of luck there may be a couple of surprises. www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_2.jpg www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_4.jpg www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_6.jpg www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_7.jpg www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_12.jpg www.leninimports.com/joan_collins_gallery_14.jpg http://joancollinsshrine.8m.com/joan5024.jpg http://joancollinsshrine.8m.com/joan8007.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins6/pictures/070.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins6/pictures/085.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins7/pictures/116.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins7/pictures/136.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins7/pictures/159.jpg www.geocities.com/joancollins7/pictures/181.jpg www.scorpiofiles.com/dynasty/showpics/alexis10.jpg www.scorpiofiles.com/dynasty/joan/alexis2.jpg www.scorpiofiles.com/dynasty/showpics/sw3.jpg www.scorpiofiles.com/dynasty/showpics/senatoralexis.jpg www.scorpiofiles.com/dynasty/joan/alexis4.jpg www.americanphoto.co.jp/pages/celebrity ... -31232.jpg www.moviemarket.co.uk/Photos/P200368_B74791.html www.moviemarket.co.uk/Photos/P200368_B74792.html www.moviemarket.co.uk/Photos/P200368_B4043.html More soon - enjoy! furpunk2
JOAN COLLINS By her own admission our beloved Joanie is not the world`s most talented actress and she`s appeared in more than her fair share of turkeys but she has one enormous redeeming feature - she has been (and still is) probably THE most consistent and dedicated fur-wearer in the movie and tv business. furpunk2
IDA LUPINO Don`t be fooled by the exotic name - Ida was actually born and brought up in London. When she started out in movies she styled herself as "the poor man`s Bette Davis" and incurred the wrath of the studios when she routinely rejected parts that her idol had also turned down. Frequently suspended for such shows of petulance she began to study the mechanics of film-making and eventually she found fame as Hollywood`s first truly successful female director. www.cineyestrellas.com/Elenco/Actrices/ ... _Ida_1.jpg www.tvparty.com/vgifs12/adams-012.jpg www.tvparty.com/vgifs/mreve.gif www.dacre.org/stills/webl/Lup0981.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
LENI RIEFENSTAHL Easily the most controversial lady covered in this thread so far , Leni Riefenstahl was a hugely important and innovative figure in the movie industry but the shadow of her past means that even today she doesn`t receive the credit and acknowledgement that her work merited. Leni started her career as a dancer but took up acting after damaging her knee. By the early 30s she was one of Germany`s most popular actresses and was held in such high regard by both the public and the studios that in 1932 she was asked to direct Das Blauelicht. Her directorial work was so radical and advanced for the time (she once took an entire film unit to the Arctic in order to film on location - no mean feat today , let alone in the 1930s!!) that Adolf Hitler , himself a wannabe artist , recognised her potential in spreading his evil visions to a wider audience. Consequently he commissioned Leni to direct a number of National Socialist propaganda films , the most notable being Triumph Of The Will (a complete and utter glorification of Hitler) and Olympia (a stunning visual record of the 1936 Berlin Olympics). Whilst the subject matter of these works makes them very uneasy viewing Riefenstahl`s abilities still make them classics and she undeniably revolutionized film-making. For example , she was the first person to effectively use slow motion and the first director to ever put a camera on rails. After the War she was held for four years in a French detention camp whilst the Allies tried to work out whether she was guilty of any war crimes due to her close association with the Fuhrer. Two tribunals cleared her of any crimes , largely thanks to the fact that she had steadfastedly refused to actually join the National Socialist party , but her reputation had been irrepairably damaged. Shunned by Hollywood she took up still photography and produced some stunning books which concentrated on native African tribes. In her late 70s she lied about her age to get scuba-diving qualifications and produced a series of brilliant underwater documentaries. Late in her life she expressed her regret about her work for the Fuhrer , even going so far as to blame herself for his rapid rise from obscurity to power. Leni Riefenstahl - dancer , actress , director , photographer , scuba diver - died in 2003 , aged 101 , alternately revered and reviled. Genius or monster? Opinion is still divided. www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... ni-AK2.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... i-AK41.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstha ... ni-PK2.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... ni-PK3.htm www.psymon.com/art/leni/SOS_Iceberg.html www.ejfelkapitany.hu/leni2.jpg www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... -klein.jpg www.dasblauelicht.net/1sos.jpg www.dasblauelicht.net/EisStill-1b.jpg www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... ni-ZS2.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... i-Div5.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... -Div40.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... -Div45.htm www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/reviews/ ... 064825.jpg www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... lanc-1.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... berg-9.htm www.helmut-schmidt-online.de/Riefenstah ... erse-3.htm www.chesslerbooks.com/eCart/catalog/SOSIceberg.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
VERA-ELLEN If you ask the question "Name the four stars of White Christmas" I bet nine times out of ten you`ll get the answer "Bing Crosby , Danny Kaye , Rosemary Clooney and ..........er........... um....... ah........... the other one." Sadly it seems that that`s how Vera-Ellen will (not) be remembered , although in her day she was considered to be the best dancer on the silver screen bar none. White Christmas should have propelled her to superstar status like her three co-stars but tragically she was already showing the physical signs of her long battle with anorexia - if you watch the film closely you`ll spot that Vera-Ellen`s neck is covered in every shot , to hide the prematurely aged and wrinkled skin on her neck. http://personal3.iddeo.es/masters/vera%20ellen/fotos/album10.jpg http://personal3.iddeo.es/masters/vera%20ellen/fotos/album9.jpg www.geocities.com/SoHo/4439/veraellen/white1.jpg www.geocities.com/SoHo/4439/veraellen/white3.jpg www.geocities.com/SoHo/4439/veraellen/v-e_and1.jpg www.moviestarsmagazine.com/picturegoer/ ... ry=pg5612e www.americanphoto.co.jp/pages/celebrity ... -34115.jpg http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00004YNIX.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg www.library.gsu.edu/spcoll/spcollimages ... 0-061d.jpg www.rosemaryclooney.com/whitechristmas/castphotox.jpg www.rosemaryclooney.com/wcbook.jpg www.rosemaryclooney.com/WHXMAS.JPG And , as always , leaving the very best til last................ www.allposters.com/-sp/Vera-Ellen-Posters_i1220904_.htm WOW!!!! Guest
Nice work furpunk. I particularly enjoyed reading about leni Riefenstahl again...I studied Nazi cinema and Art at college. She was treated badly after the war and her genius not recongnised. Scientists doctors and engineers were all embraced by us after the war however despite direct involvement with Nazi ideology and practice. I also enjoyed the post about vera Ellen. Did you also check her on www.opera gloves.com ? I think there may be something on there too. Leep up the good work
furpunk2
Thanks sable. Yes , www.operagloves.com is a bit of a pain really. There are dozens and dozens of great pics but I can`t provide direct links to them which is really annoying since some of them are unique to the site. Like you I found Leni Riefenstahl`s life story completely fascinating - a truly incredible lady. The great thing about this project from a totally selfish point of view is not only unearthing some new pics but how much I`m learning about the great and the (not so) good , putting facts and life stories to what had previously just been faces on a screen. If I ever get to the end of it - and there`s no sign of that yet - maybe I should gather it all together and write a book. I don`t suppose any of you own a publishing company by any chance............ Regards furpunk

LordTheNightKnight
Love the pics, but why is the abbreviation of national socialist party censored? I don't see how posting that word glorifies or villifies them in any way. Or is this some extreme fear of threads degenerating, as stated in Godwin's Law? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law)
furpunk2
I wouldn`t say it`s a matter of patience , more of a labour of love. I`d like a mod`s view of LordTheNightKnight`s query though since I found that a bit odd too - when I typed up the post and previewed it the same word was censored. I understand that we need a certain level of censorship and there are certain words I would never dream of using - but come on , my daughters` school history books contain that particular word and if it`s ok for an 11-year old schoolgirl why not us? As for the Vera-Ellen shoot-out I`m undecided. If your avatar was a full-length shot then hands up , no contest , but I think www.allposters.com/-sp/Vera-Ellen-Posters_i1220904_.htm runs it pretty close. furpunk

furpunk2
Getting back to less serious stuff and the reason we`re here in the first place........ LUPE VELEZ "The Mexican Spitfire" One of the trio of Mexican actresses who made the successful move to Hollywood in the 1930s (Carmen Miranda and Dolores del Rio being the other two) Lupe Velez is unfortunately better remembered today for her grisly death than for her films. During her career she lived up to her nickname witha string of tempestuous love affairs and a five-year marriage to Johnny Weissmuller that was little more than one continuous fist-fight. In 1944 Velez found herself pregnant by a married man and decided to end it all in a manner befitting a true Hollywood starlet. Decking her room out with flowers and candles she made herself up and dressed in a silk robe before taking an overdose of Seconal and lying down on her bed to die , planning that whoever discovered her body would find a scene worthy of the front pages. Unfortunately the drugs reacted badly with her last meal of enchiladas and she had to sprint to the bathroom to throw up - in her haste she tripped up and thus was found dead the next day in the most unglamourous pose imaginable , sprawled on the bathroom floor with her head down the toilet. www.7sang.com/closeup/suicide/photo/sui ... s-lupe.jpg www.upress.umn.edu/screenstyle/images/e ... ticism.jpg www.erbzine.com/mag3/velez1h4.jpg http://silentladies.com/Velez/Velez08.jpg http://82.67.2.30/COUVERTURES/PV/PV22.JPG http://operator_99.blogspot.com/2006/05/lupe-velez.html Enjoy!
