furpunk2
ANN TODD British actress who drifted into films through her job as a drama teacher. She didn`t hit the big time until The Seventh Veil by which time she was approaching 40 and beginning to lose her marketable good looks. She`s probably best remembered for the scandal of her relationship with the legendary British director Sir David Lean - after he directed her they were so besotted that they abandoned their respective families to marry and , sadly , Ann Todd hardly acted again. www.britishpictures.com/photos4/photo356.htm www.spotlightcd.com/hallfame/portraits/ann_todd.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
Back on the classic fur trail after a short holiday with the good lady to celebrate our first wedding anniversary ; a wonderful time was had by all but the weather was appalling - 84 degrees . Roll on winter......... ADRIENNE AMES Originally used as a stand-in for Pola Negri (see a previous post for her pics) Adrienne Ames became a star in her own right in the 1930s usually playing high-class society women. Shortly after retiring from the film business she died from cancer in 1947 at the tragically young age of 40. www.davidmanners.com/images/FROM%20HELL ... 31big.jpeg www.davidmanners.com/images/FROM%20HELL ... 33big.jpeg Enjoy! furpunk2
COLLEEN MOORE One of the trio of silent actresses who epitomised the `Flapper` style in a string of hugely successful Twenties movies - but whilst everyone remembers Clara Bow and Louise Brooks poor Colleen Moore seems to have been largely forgotten. Maybe the advent of colour wasn`t to her advantage since rather bizarrely she was famous for having one brown eye and one blue. http://silentladies.com/Moore/Moore62.jpg http://silentladies.com/Moore/Moore191.jpg http://silentladies.com/Moore/Moore187.jpg http://silentladies.com/Moore/Moore88.jpg http://silentladies.com/Moore/Moore174.jpg www.things-and-other-stuff.com/images/a ... _moore.jpg www.geh.org/ar/strip19/m197701892052.jpg www.geh.org/ar/strip19/m197701892055.jpg Enjoy! Mr Barguzin
There was a series a decade or so ago about the history of Hollywood, and if memory serves me correctly, the lady that talked most about the Silent period and also the early talkies was a "Colleen Moore". This one had dark hair, wore glasses, had a decent voice and was "well preserved". It just never clicked that she had been there, done that... although I may have missed that episode. furpunk2
Sounds like the lady in question although the series you`re talking about (which was a chronological history of the film industry simply entitled Hollywood) was actually made in 1980 - Colleen Moore herself died aged 88 in 1988. Although she retired from films relatively early (in her 30s) she seems to have been one smart lady since she lived very comfortably for the rest of her life on the income she made from investments on the stock market and in TV companies. Up until her death she was a regular at film festivals and was always available to talk about her time in the industry. She also wrote two books in the 1960s , one her autobiography and the other a guide for women on how to play the stock market. Hope this is of some interest furpunk
Mr Barguzin
Furpunk2 Remember that although we in Oz might be 10 or 8 hours ahead of you timewise... when it comes to telly we can be quite a ways behind. Am wondering which series of 'Top Gear' we are going to see next... and as for Dr Who... well, maybe in July... or August. 2006 Ah hopes.

furpunk2
GITTA ALPAR A new name to me I must confess. Gitta Alpar started her career as an opera singer in her native Hungary but was soon performing to packed opera houses in Germany and Austria. The German film industry recognised her potential and after only a couple of movie performances she seemed set for superstardom but sadly she had to flee Europe in 1936 after the new National Socialist government officially declared her marriage to the actor Gustav Frohlich invalid ; being beautiful and multi-talented counted for nothing when you were Jewish. Gitta landed in the USA and seems to have vanished without a trace - more`s the pity if these handful of pics are anything to go by. www.cyranos.ch/smalpar.jpg www.coralbrowne.com/images/gitta.jpg http://film.virtual-history.com/cigcard/41/thumb/339.jpg http://film.virtual-history.com/cigcard/41/thumb/367.jpg http://film.virtual-history.com/cigcard/28/thumb/315.jpg http://film.virtual-history.com/cigcard/5/thumb/135.jpg http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/220/228123.jpg Enjoy! LordTheNightKnight
I a disparragin comment about her dancing with Gene Kelly she is reported to have said: "I dance with him backwards and in high heels." OFF That quate was about Astaire. And it wasn't to put him down. It was because his talent was recognized, while hers was overlooked. Her comment was that she could do everything he did, but backwards and in heels. Plus furpunk's post about her was woefully inadequate. She wore tons of furs, but half of those links are just a few of her outfits.
furpunk2
In my defence I`m not trying to post definitive lists of every available pic for each actress , simply to provide a very broad overview of the golden age of furs in Hollywood. My hope is simply that it will point people in the direction of some actresses worth checking out and maybe to uncover a few stars of yesteryear who`ve been neglected. The thread is open to everyone so if you`ve got more/better pics then please post them! ANNE BAXTER The granddaughter of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Appeared on screen for the first time aged 17 and gradually built up a reputation as a talented and charming lady to work with. Her heyday was the 1940s when she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and also put in possibly her most memorable performance in the classic All About Eve. She retired from films in 1960 to go and live on a cattle station in the Australian outback but returned to TV and theatre work in the mid Sixties. www.meredy.com/annebaxter/ab12.jpg www.meredy.com/annebaxter/allabouteve02.jpg www.meredy.com/annebaxter/batman02.jpg www.meredy.com/annebaxter/bedevilled4.jpg www.meredy.com/annebaxter/onedesire18.jpg www.meredy.com/annebaxter/onedesire16.jpg www.ambersons.com/images/Holt%20and%20Baxter%20BTS.jpg www.ambersons.com/images/Holt%20and%20Baxter%20BTS2.jpg http://cgi.zdnet.de/teleschau/i/200548/200548_160571_2_012.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
Point duly noted , and no offence taken . Having waited two years for the miracle of broadband to reach this particular backwater it`s funny how quickly you forget the nightmare days of dial-up...............I`ll try and be a bit more fastidious in the future , starting with - ELIZABETH TAYLOR Since she`s more famous nowadays for her bizarre relationship with Michael Jackson and her numerous marriages it`s easy to forget that once upon a time Liz Taylor was one of Hollywood`s most beautiful and talented performers - ask a hundred people to rate the most famous British actress of all time and 99 of them would probably choose her as number one. In 1999 she was honoured by the Queen and made a Dame which prompted the wisecrack "I`ve always been a broad , now I`m a dame." Although we like to claim her as our own (there aren`t many Brits who`ve won two Best Actress Oscars so we need to grab whoever we can) it`s a little-known fact that her parents were both Americans and when Liz was born in London she was actually registered as a US citizen. The important thing for us , though , is of course her lifelong love of fur , which shows no sign of wavering even as she approaches 80. Important note - most of these links are from the definitive Liz Taylor fansite http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/ where you can find over 7000 pics and vidcaps. This is NOT a definitive list so feel free to browse at your leisure. Also please be aware that the site is updated on a fairly regular basis so whilst the album number remains the same the position number of the following pics has , in one or two cases , changed since I first visited. All these are correct as of today , but apologies if you try them at some point in the future and find a pic that isn`t furry! All updates and corrections gratefully received. http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=224&pos=43 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=224&pos=72 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=224&pos=73 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=225&pos=14 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=225&pos=12 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=225&pos=20 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=230&pos=0 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=230&pos=1 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=230&pos=2 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=229&pos=0 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=229&pos=2 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=229&pos=3 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=229&pos=4 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=427&pos=1 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=427&pos=36 http://taylor.hollywood.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=593&pos=0 www.bbc.co.uk/london/entertainment/imag ... taylor.jpg www.markreubengallery.com/getty/images/ ... taylor.jpg www.geocities.com/cinecyu/Elizab10.jpg And one fake Liz - www.timbeasleyscelebritystars.com/TBCSI ... furpunk2
NANCY CARROLL "Baby Face" When Hollywood made the transition from silents to talkies it quickly discovered completely new genres to explore and exploit and one of its instant success stories was the musical ; it was one thing to hear your favourite stars talk , to hear them sing was a revelation. Born into a musical family and already a well-known face in Broadway musicals in the Twenties , Nancy Carroll was perfectly equipped to cash in on this and quickly became one of the movie-going public`s favourite performers. In 1933 she received more fan mail than any other actor or actress. Her angelic features , however , hid a fiery temper and she soon earned a reputation as one of the most difficult actresses to direct and work with ; as a result studios began to chose lesser but more co-operative performers and by 1938 Nancy Carroll had made her last movie. www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Chateau/6060/france1.jpg http://silentladies.com/Carroll/Carrol03.jpg www.geocities.com/tbird55agb/pensive.jpg www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Chateau/6060/nano4.jpg www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Chateau/6060/nan_mem3.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
JUNE WILKINSON Another Brit wannabe in the Sabrina mould (see previous posts) who failed to make it in Hollywood but carved out a pretty successful career for herself nevertheless. June Wilkinson was trained as a classical dancer and had already appeared on the London stage when she went to the States in the late Fifties to appear on the Today show. Her natural talent and stunning figure (42-22-36) landed her a small part in one of Russ Meyer`s early films , but she wanted nationwide exposure so she called Playboy and , according to her side of the story , Hugh Hefner himself answered the phone. Subsequently she appeared in the magazine seven times and acquired the nickname "The Bosom" ; film appearances soon followed , but sadly directors seemed more interested in showing off her looks than giving her any kind of decent script to use her undoubted talent on and virtually all her films were pretty dire B-movies. After dating Elvis briefly she did a bit of TV (most notably in Batman) before touring with legendary nutcase Spike Jones and his band. When last seen she was hosting a cable-tv show about movie directors and looking decidedly fit despite her age (she`ll be 66 this year). furpunk2
BELINDA LEE Given the public`s seemingly insatiable appetite for glamour , scandal , intrigue and tragedy you`d think that Belinda Lee should be a household name - but have you ever heard of her? Like Sabrina (see previous posts) Belinda Lee was another attempt by the British film industry to find a starlet to rival Marilyn Monroe - unfortunately although she was a classically trained actress and a graduate of RADA she found herself cast as the dumb blonde in a series of poor films produced by the ailing Rank Organisation. Disillusioned with Britain she sought work in Italy where , allegedly , she embarked upon an adulterous affair with Prince Filippo Orsini , an episode which scandalised European high society due to the Orsini family`s close links to the Vatican. Rank abruptly terminated her contract amid rumours that she`d tried to commit suicide and she disappeared from view , only to re-emerge , now living in Rome , with a totally revamped image. Gone was the bubbly blonde - Belinda Lee was now a sultry villainous brunette , much to the distress of the British cinematic press. She made ten films in Italy and seemed to be establishing a reputation in Europe similar to that enjoyed by Elizabeth Taylor in Hollywood when she was killed in a devastating car crash in 1961 at the age of 26 , leaving behind more questions than answers about her brief but bizarre career. www.lovegoddess.info/BL17.jpg http://home.clara.net/crumpet/belinda/belinda.pc2a.jpg http://home.clara.net/crumpet/belinda/bel2.jpg Enjoy! furpunk2
LORETTA YOUNG Made her first film aged 3 and so enchanted her co-star Mae Murray (see previous posts) that she wanted to adopt her ; although she ultimately failed the young Loretta spent nearly three years living with the silent star. When she grew up she was quickly snapped up by Hollywood and soon developed a reputation as one of the movie industry`s hardest working actresses. She was rewarded with an Oscar for The Farmer`s Daughter in 1947 , and after retiring from films she embarked upon a hugely successful second career in television. In it`s day The Loretta Young Show was one of the most watched programmes on tv , despite its star`s contractual stipulation that repeats were never to be shown - apparently she dreaded the thought of being seen in later years with outdated fashions and hairstyles. Trivial fact - aged only 21 she bore Clark Gable a daughter as a result of an affair but somehow managed to keep the pregnancy and birth a secret , pretending that she`d adopted the child. Allegedly the daughter , who took the name Judy Lewis , only found out who her real father was from playground gossip when she started school! www.meredy.com/lorettayoung/youngfur.jpg www.meredy.com/lorettayoung/youngfur2.jpg http://silentladies.com/OL47/YoungL8.jpg www.movieforum.com/people/actresses/lor ... s/suez.jpg www.things-and-other-stuff.com/images/a ... oung_l.jpg http://members.tripod.com/~compmast/young/ssoct34.jpg www.moviestarsmagazine.com/fweekly/prev ... ry=fw3712a www.lorettayoungonline.com/1999.jpg www.lorettayoungonline.com/sm1955.jpg www.lorettayoungonline.com/54-01-FK.jpg www.lorettayoungonline.com/32-05-SL.jpg www.lorettayoungonline.com/sm1957-2.jpg www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Palace/5904 ... dYoung.jpg Enjoy!
