The One That Got Away - This Time!

All,

I thought you guys might like - or sympathise with my sadness over - a story from one of my shoots last week.

One of the models said that she loved fur and would bring a couple of her real furs with her to a shoot. She arrived only with a little pink rabbit jacket - very cute but we didn't use it in the end - but sadly couldn't find her other fur as she had just moved house and couldn't find it that morning as it was still packed away.

The absent fur in question: a £1500 ($2500) dyed-red chinchilla bolero jacket! Arrgghhh!

Next time, next time!

Regards,

Mr Mockle

Patience is a virtue, and never found in fur fashion shoots perhaps!

Have you re-booked her????

Auzmink

Auzmink,

Oh many of the models are very patient, and have to be on set while us guys behind the lens phaff about with the scenery, props and lighting.

And that model is definitely getting rebooked - as many of those I've worked with will be - although the waiting list of models to debut and return grows longer by the week. I shoot quite infrequently, but even if I did one shoot every week it could easily be a year before I get round to rebooking a model by the time I work through the list of all those girls I've worked with or who want to work with me. Fur modelling is very much in demand over here in the UK.

Mr Mockle

Mr M, that statement you made regarding the popularity of fur modelling is quite interesting. Can you elaborate?

In general, are models keen to be seen wearing fur, or are you able to sell the site containing models in fur well? Or a combination of other factors?

I hear your and others reports about the increase in fur use in the UK with glee, and so perhaps through your work and time the tide is very much turning (a dammed cold Winter also helps)!

Its gratifying you have the opportunity to do such photographic work, and do it well. Keep snapping.

What do you shoot with Mr Mockle?

Discocop,

I'm reading your question as a technical one; actually I only use two relatively modest spec cameras (a Nikon DLSR and a Panasonic HD camcorder) these days. Travelling light is essential, although I invested in a couple of work lights for the latest shoots which I hope made a great difference in the video scenes.

Of course, if you wanted to ask a difference question then please do so.

Mr Mockle

Auzmink,

I think there's some general points to be made about the increasing popularity of fur among women, and particularly young women, here in the UK, but also some specific points about the increasing keenness of models wanting to pose in fur, or for me specifically.

I think a number of factors are adding to the popularity of fur in general here (in the UK) including, but not limited to:

  • - the colder winter weathers of late

  • - latest/current fashion trends

  • - an increase in the number of local/national "celebrities" wearing fur, and wearing it more often

  • - the increasing number of people living in the UK from more traditional fur wearing regions through migration (specifically eastern Europe)

  • - the recent price of second hand and vintage furs (although that has been increasing for a year or two due to its popularity)

  • - the natural rebellion of the younger generation wanting to do things differently from the previous one

  • - possibly a change in attitude to wearing fur in general (for whatever reason)

As a sheer example through numerical comparison, about 10 years ago I may not have seen 10 fur wearers during an entire winter in London, despite travelling through the most likely fur sighting areas almost daily. Yet in one single afternoon not 10 days ago - an untypical Saturday, outside of the busy sales or shopping weekends or the tourist peak seasons - I was seeing up to 10 young women (aged 18-25) wearing a second hand or vintage fur jacket or coat during every daylight hour that I was in those same parts of the city. In addition I was also seeing a handful more of the more traditional sightings of older women in minks and selected other furs. That rate of increase is extremely promising indeed.

As for the models, well again there are a number of factors that could be in play in addition to some of those above:

  • - an increasing number of models

  • - better (online) communication channels for models and photographers to make contact and bookings

  • - the economic climate with fewer photographers around offering paid work

  • - the experience itself, either for the novelty, the glamour or the warmth - many studios are always very cold!

  • - personal recommendations (privately or publicly) from other models or studios about me and how I work

  • - (humbly) an appreciation that they like my work and want to be part of it

So all of those things are hopefully keeping demand among fur wearers and models wanting to wear fur high. My big problem now is getting to work with all the keen models - and often! As the sites grow, I'll get the chance to work with the best ones more regularly, hopefully further spreading the interest and reputation.

Regards,

Mr Mockle

All,

A further pleasing footnote on this story. A fellow model and collaborator has just told me that the model in question (she with the chinchilla in hiding) has just brought herself a mink coat. Very well done her! She did spend a fair bit of our shoot wrapped up in my black mink between scenes anyway so hopefully she's purchased a similar one; she did look stunning in it.

Mr Mockle
