If you don't get a big welcome it's not one you want to buy from or revisit.

My experiences at Ungar Furs in Portland have all been the most friendly. Like an old fashoned visit to the Barber.

I agree with that.

A furrier is like a hair stylist. A stylist needs to make people feel good about wearing his hairstyles. If your stylist makes you feel like you are being attacked with a pair of hedge clippers, would you go back to him? Not only no but F*** no!

So, I would say that at least half of the experience of going to a furrier is emotional or stylistic. If you don't like the guy (or the woman) and you don't like to wear the things that the guy is trying to sell you there's no point in being there, is there?

When you go to a furrier for the first time, talk to them. Find out what they are like. Do you like their style? Do you like the way the product looks? Do you like the way you feel when you wear the product?

If they act like used car salesmen it would probably be better to pass.

The first time I visited my furrier in St Petersburg, he couldn't have been more welcoming. Actually, I showed up on a Saturday when his store was 'closed' and he was working on the roof! Nonetheless, he welcomed me in and took the time to show me his entire facility. We're not talking just the showroom - he showed me the workshop where he repaired furs, described in detail the cleaning process and showed me the facilities they had to do that job. Finally, he took me on a tour through his 2 fur vaults, explaining how they are constructed and maintained (relatively important considering that here in FL, a hurricane can easily caused week long power outages... not entirely good for clothing sealed what can best be described as a bunker). What I thought would be a 10, 15 minute visit turned out to be a 2 hour adventure.

Paul:

I agree totally with all of the above but there is one more thing to remember.

Are you thinking of a coat for you or your girl friend / wife?

If you are thinking of a coat for you, NEVER go in and tell them you are wanting to buy a coat for your "Sister" or "Girl Friend", etc. Tell them point blank it is for you. If you are thinking of a coat for your girl friend, then tell them such. I am assuming from your profile that you are not yet married.

If this is a coat for you, then as mentioned tell them such. The first time you may feel strange but promise yourself before you go in that you are going to do exactly that. "Good afternoon sir, can we by chance show you something? Yes, I am looking for a coat for myself!" It is that easy. First off, if you don't you are being dishonest and secondly, you want to know if you can deal with them in future. If it is for you and they tell you that "Otter" is the only coat that will work for a man then be nice. Look around a bit. And leave. Otherwise if they do not say such, then let them show you some items. Then, if you see a fox coat you like tell them you like the "Look and feel" of that fur. Don't sound like an expert. But let them show it to you. And then, you can simply ask if it would be big enough to let you try it on, etc. you will find that no coats have sizes on them. I've never understood that!

Just remember that if you ask about a coat for your "sister" when you go in, you will NEVER in the http://near future be able to go in and ask about one for yourself, etc. You burn all of your bridges. And on top of that, the furrier or employee will sense right away that you are wasting their time and you will not likely have a good experience at all. Be honest and tell them who it is for. If it is for you, then tell them!

Your first visit to a furrier can be a fantastic experience! A day to remember. Make sure you make the most of it. I've had some great experiences. One time I was trying on a white fox coat and a couple of women came in and instantly said to the furrier "Why did you never show me a coat like that. That looks absolutely spectacular on him!" Just one experience of many indeed.

Above all have fun!

I'm not trying to sound mean or like I'm yelling but remember it's YOUR damn money.

If you feel self-conscious about buying a fur for yourself, or for that matter, buying a fur for your wife, your girlfriend, your mother, your sister, your boyfriend or anybody else, it's still your damn money.

The last time I checked, we still lived in a free country. You have the right to spend your money any way you see fit. If you feel like people are looking down on you for buying a fur coat for yourself when you are a man, just thumb your nose at them. (Rhetorically speaking, of course.) You have the right to buy a fur coat and that's nobody's business but yours. It doesn't mattery why you are buying it. It doesn't matter what you plan to do with it after you buy it. I don't care if you are going to take it home and get naked with it. It's nobody's business!

Again, I'm not yelling or trying to tell you what to do or what to think. I'm just trying to be encouraging even at the expense of being blunt. You should not feel like you don't have the right to do what you want to do.

In fact, I would say that feeling comfortable with yourself is the first thing that you need even before you walk into the store. If you feel like you are skulking around in a trench coat and a wide brimmed hat you're not going to have a good experience with your new purchase.

(Unless, of course, if you LIKE skulking around in a trench coat and a wide brimmed hat then, by all means, GO FOR IT! )

When I first decided that I liked fur I felt a bit self-conscious. Then I became more comfortable and decided that I didn't care whether people knew that I liked fur. When I bought my wife her fur coat, I was a bit apprehensive at first but, we took it home and, when she wore it outside for the first time and she decided that she really LIKED her new fur, everything was groovy!

I was in a similar situation when I first decided that I liked Teddy Bears. It took a while to get comfortable with the idea of a grown man buying Bears but, now, I don't worry about it. If I want a Bear it's my right to have one.

Nowadays, I'll walk into a fur store and look around to my heart's content. If I decide that I want to buy something I'll put my money down on the counter and I won't even think twice about what people think or what they say.

It's my damn money. Right?

Paul,

While most furriers will be happy to see you so long as it appears you are trying on coats searching for a fur for yourself, many will get much less hospitable if it appears you are just trying on coats to get pictures of yourself in fur.

AK, I've noticed the same thing. I've never done it myself, but I've been in the shop a couple of times when people asked and the furrier pretty much disappeared instantly at that point. That's one thing I would tend to avoid trying

I have taken photos a couple of times without problems but I agree. Furriers get sketchy if they don't think you are serious about fur shopping and only want pictures.

Keep it down to one or two pics and make sure you tell the salesperson that you want the picture to help you decide what you want.

(Which is why you really want the picture in the first place, right?... RIGHT? )

Always ask first. If they say, "No," or if they seem cold to the idea, put the camera away.

hey guys,

i had the best time today and took the advice of listening and learning while there. I wore several beautiful furs. I wore a knee lenght swarkara lamb dark brown coat. just couldnt have been more happy with that one. that one is on my top list of what id like to have. the other fur was a gorgeous and I do mean gorgeous full lenght mahogony mink coat. i wore it for a while in the shop while looking around . the ladys were soooo nice to me and the whole experience made my day. I will see about getting a pic up of me wearing the mahogony mink coat in the mens section..

thanks guys,

i truelly had an experience not to be forgotten and will return to that furrier for business...

Glad it went well. It really should always! But some of these folks are just so stuck in the past that when they see a man coming in they just seem to turn off somehow, and will only show the huge one size fits all coat that looks terrible and feels worse when you wear it, and then they decide that if they tell you how nice it looks 276 times, somehow you will suddenly lost attention and think it does too. That is an insult to their customers really!

But there are the good ones out there and looks like you found one. So glad that it went well!

Hi,

Flinfl, what's the name and address of your furrier in StPetersburg? I'm on holiday in Orlando from 19th August for two weeks so I could drive over there to visit them

Cheers,

Funinfox
