Yes, they did! It was John Jacob Astor's fortune, built upon the fur trade, that founded the economy of the U.S.A. in the early days.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! I'm spending the morning in my silver tipped raccoon coat... and in a couple of hours I'll be wearing the same coat as I cook the turkey and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

...and just as a reminder, tomorrow is Furry Friday - be sure to wear your furs proudly and show the idiots at peta exactly what you think of them!

That won't be a problem here with temps starting out at 0F (-18C) and only expected to rise to about 14F (-10C).

I will be wearing my mouton parka.

All,

The days here in my part of Spain are still too warm for furs but it's cooling down fairly rapidly and the nights are nearly chilly so there may be a few in the larger cities and towns nearby and the shops have some lovely furs in stock too ready for the season. Certainly in Madrid though some of the public and celebrities are starting to wear their furs around judging by the television shows. A few furs, real and fake, are appearing already on the presenters, guests, audience members, outside reporters and celebrity red-carpet interviewees on most of the Telecinco panel/celebrity gossip and reality shows like Salvame, La Noria and Accoralados (well done Raquel Sanchez SIlva) and probably Ana Rosa too if I watched early enough so we'll probably see a few on similar shows on the other national channels too. Some of the better OB opportunites seem to have gone though now that girls like Romina Belluscio and Berta Collado have moved to more studio-based roles over the summer.

Regards,

Mr Mockle

Why is it that women think a ratty looking fake piece of fur with their ensemble is attractive?

I see it more and more.

I make an effort to flaunt my fur when I see that.

I could feel my face getting red from embarrassment! I would find it creepy if my older sister new I had a fur fetish. With the exception of my fiance I don't think anyone would EVER think for a moment I would love fur.

Does your sister know that you have a fur fetish?

No. I don't think she would ever give it a thought. I keep my fur fetish a secret. That is why I love to visit the fur den. I can let my pro fur feelings run wild.

I think your fiance owes you a fur job for that.

You would think! She looks at it like she is keeping my secret ,so I owe HER!( Dinner/movie)

  • 3 weeks later...

O.K. so here goes. As many of you know, I just bought my first fur. A jacket. It is one of those rex rabbit dyed to look like chinchilla jackets, but it's fun! The first reactions were from my wife and daughter. My daughter said I look ridiculous, and my wife said that she would not be seen in public with me (more on this later). Initially I only wore the jacket out in the early morning or the evening to walk our dog. It was my "fur time". A few cars passed by and reacted as anticipated they stared, or braked heavily and kind of laughed. But many others just kind of waved as usual (and I live in a small very conservative farming community).

Then I finally worked up the courage to wear it to school as I am a professor at a state university. The first time I wore it, my class erupted, not necessarily with laughter but it certainly made an impact. I immediately felt compelled to defend my choice, not because it is "fur" but because of the presumed expense. At the present time, good ol' California is in dire straights (don't come here to start a career) and the university system in which I work has raised tuition every semester (yes, NOT year, but SEMESTER) for the last four or five years. I wanted to assure the students that "they weren't paying me too much" (even though it is none of their business). At any rate, I said that I mostly commute by bicycle (8 miles one way) or by Honda 90 (of driven every day, I use about one gallon of gas every week and a half). Well the students got a kick out of it to say the least.

I, coincidently, went shoe shopping the following weekend at the local mall. I went into one store to find one of my students. I bought a pair of shoes and said "I'll see you Tuesday???" to which she responded "I'll see you Monday". So I asked "Did I surprise you with my jacket yesterday?" Without missing a beat she said "I think your jacket is FANTASTIC!" Now I dont' know if she was trying to score points, but at this point I don't care.

I saw another student in the hall way of our building and she said "she loved my jacket" but then went on to say that it reminded her of the coat in American Gangster...not really the way I want to be thought of.

I finally wore it to my afternoon class last week. Like my other classes the students erupted. BUT!!! There was a fire drill within about 15 minutes of the start of the class so we had to evacuate. We gathered in our "spot" and I saw another faculty person I knew and she was with another woman. The woman saw my jacket under my arm and asked what it was I responded that it was my jacket. She asked if she could touch it to which I said "Sure if your hands are clean". She went on to describe how she used to live in Canada and that she had furs there, and that she misses having furs as we live in Northen CA. I told her the beauty of my jacket is that is keeps me warm in sub 30 degree weather, but is comfortable in mid 40's to even to 50's weather. All the while she was rubbing my jacket. The person I knew also started to rub my jacket and went on to describe how her grandfather had a fur-lined full length coat made which was wonderful. After she felt my jacket she just said "I want this on the inside!" A number of the GUYS, a couple of whom are BIG and STRONG and I definitely would NOT want to mess with were absolutely giddy over touching, feeling, rubbing my fur! They wanted to touch it and were amazed at "how soft it is". Lastly, after we returned to class from the fire drill one of the guys commented that "women were flocking around me and my fur". There were only two (above) but obviously he noticed that I got attention.

On the "other side" I was in the hallway of my building with a student when the topic of my jacket came up. I commented that the VERY YOUNG faculty member next door to me thought I was a freak (my words) for wearing a fur jacket ( he said hello to me the first day I wore my jacket using a high-pitched voice like a little girl...this guy is an idiot for rmany other reasons!). Her response was, "Dr. A, everyone thinks you're a freak for wearing your fur jacket."

The other day, I wore the jacket (again) to school and when I went into my morning class the students didn't really do much as a group but a few said something like "wow, wearing your fur". So I took the opportunity to comment that my wife said that she wouldn't be seen in public with me wearing the fur jacket, to which one of my female students responded "I LOVE your jacket!" I spoke with her later to thank her for her comments and she was amazed that my wife didn't want to be seen with me and again stated tht she thought the jacket was great.

My wife and I went to San Francisco for Easter. We went go to the Dan Hicks concert at Davies Symphony Hall on the Friday before Easter (Good Friday of course). I wore the fur. My wife and I had to wait in line for our tickets (will call). She didn't stay with me. Further, when she got the tickets, she came back found me, gave me my ticket and said "I'll see you inside." and walked away. Gee, you think she doesn't like the jacket???

Lastly, my wife, my stepmother and I went to the Jean Paul Gaultier (sp?) exhibit at the de Young Museum in GG Park in SF (NOTE: I am NOT a museum type). Most of the clothing is pretty far out there. As a male I wouldn't wear most of the clothing "designed" for men (but he did have a striped fuzzy sweater that my stepmother pointed out and said "there's your jacket Jack" We both laughed. I wish I had worn the jacket. I thought about it, but decided against it. One of the clothing designs was an outfit that Gaultier himself wore as host of the 1995 (7? 8?) MTV music awards. It consisted of a leopard print brief and VERY close-fitting t-shirt that was a one-piece affair with over-the-knee leopard print boots. To top it all off, a full length SYNTHETIC fur coat. Admittedly the synthetic fur felt grand (yes I snuck a feel) AND looked like mink. I'd wear the coat, not the rest. If you google "Jean Paul Gaultier MTV awards" under "images" you can see the outfit. The coat was GREAT!

Overall the reaction to my jacket is mixed. I figure at least it is mixed, and not all negative. I have many female students who tell me to wear the jacket (I don't know if they want to laugh at me or because they like the fur). When I tell my wife my female students like my fur, her response is "That's because they want to wear it!" And the problem with that is???? I have a number of former students who saw my picture on facebook that like the jacket and encourage me to wear it. Most, admittedly, say nothing.

Oh yeah ONE last story. The first time I wore it to school, I went into the main office of our department. I purposely went into the office of our chair. When she saw me in the fur, she exclaimed that it was unique (or something). When she asked if she could touch it, I put my arm out and she started rubbing. Her rubbing turned into both hands going up and down my arm! I had to pull away to get my arm back! Then she wanted a "fur hug". She commented that she would like a jacket like mine but with the fur on the inside! Our student assistant saw me and kind of giggled. She LOVED how the jacket felt. A couple of minutes later she came down the hall, as I was, I asked her if she wanted to try on my jacket. She said sure. She put it on, started rubbing the fur and said "I think you should wear this every day." with a grin on her face.

I am hoping to wear the fur tomorrow (yeah April 13th, late for CA) but it is likely to be raining. Oh well.

CIAO! Been enjoying the fur!

Sounds to me like if you were single you would be having a lot of fur fun right now! (colleagues, not students) Hopefully your wife will come round. Maybe get her a jacket that is not as 'out there', a sheared mink jacket that is fairly neutral in colour,or similar, to get her in fur and happy to be seen wearing it.

Good on ya for getting out there, especially in your place of work. Got any photos?

Furless, I think that your wife here probably just needs some time. And the key with fur at any time is that you just treat it as "Normal". You let everyone know that there is nothing unusual here. You are just dressed in your jacket.

The key probably is to not push it. Just keep wearing it now and then, maybe a little bit more as time goes along. I imagine in no time she will be accepting it as the "Norm" too.

Sounds like you got a lot of attention at school, mostly positive. The girls, both staff and students, both love your fur.

As for the fee increases, Yes, it is really crazy. My daughter is attending CSU. I work overtime to try to keep up with fees, we spend more on CSU per month than what we spend on anything else.

Thanks for all the tips! Yes I do have a couple of pictures, but they are very large files. Can the photo gallery accomodate large files?

As for my wife coming around, I don't think it will happen. Though me in my fur is a bit more normal. A few weeks ago I was home alone and it was a bit chilly so I put on the jacket. I was doing odd stuff (actually putting in a load of wash) when my wife came home. I figured I'd just keep doing what I was doing and not try to hide that I was in my jacket. My wife saw me, got out her phone and took a picture of me without me knowing. Then sent the picture to her sister. When I asked who she went the picture to, she replied that it was none of my business. A debate ensued. Eventually, she fessed up (hence me knowing she sent the picture to her sister) and that it was comical (for her and her sister). Her sister replied "why is Jack wearing a rug". My wife got a HUGE laugh out of that, but in a subsequent conversation with her sister, I walked by my wife while wearing my jacket and said "Say hello to Laura for me". My wife said later that my sister-in-law wants to feel my jacket. She asked "Is it soft?"

Other comments from peers have been "Well that's a (pause) different look." One peer kind of laughed and said "I had a jacket like that in high school." But a number GUY peers have said they like the jacket. One who I thought might really have trouble with the jacket as he is our outdoor guy so is "in tune with mother nature" and so forth thinks it is absolutely great! Finally we have one person who is a vegan. I was talking with a student outside while I was wearing the jacket and she walked by. She looked, saw, and didn't say a word. IF SHE DOES, I am going to ask her where she thinks the down in her down jackets come from. Yeah go figure, a vegan who wears down jackets. In my mind she doesn't have a leg to stand on. Overall professor types are stodgy conservative types. Further, professor types my age all look the same baggy pants, twead jackets you get teh picture. If nothing else, it is fun to shake people up. Admittedly I'd like to get leather pants to REALLY shock people. Yeah, I know that's over the top!

One LAST wearing experience. Another guy peer sees me in my fur jacket. He immediately comes over and asks where I got the jacket. I tell him Nevada City. He responds he knows the store and goes on to say that that stores drives his girlfriend crazy. I ask "crazy in a positive or negative way?" His response was that she is an animal right person so she HATES the store. So this creates a bit of contention between them. When they go there, he goes in starts to feel the furs, and says to her that he wants to stay to feel the furs and that she can go elswhere and they can meet up later. He then proceeds to rub my sleeve and asks if he can hug me. Sure why not. He did ask "How did you get your wife to let you get this"?

Again thanks to all for your support. I'll upload a picture or two if the gallery can accomodate large files.

The Gallery should be able to accommodate image files up to 8 MB. If the files are larger than that, I suggest scaling them with an image editor first. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is one such program that can do the work, is free, and available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. http://www.gimp.org/
