Newspapers, advertisements, etc...

Each Sunday I buy the NYT, in the hope that there will be sales advertisementss and such (but also for the crossword puzzle, of course, and the book section); but budgets and/or trends have changed, not for the better, and it seems that nowadays there are only two or three adverts -- Saks, Bloomingdales, Macy's and maybe Basso -- and that's about it! Such a shame. I remember when the New York 'papers were chock-a-block of beautiful pictures and adverts.

Do the big department stores still give out beautiful booklets, I wonder? I can remember, too, gorgeous brochures from Saks and Bloomingdales, for example.

Is the number of furriers in the big cities also going down, I suspect? I think many of the smaller chaps are disappearing (northeast, anyway). Sad, isn't it?

I remember clipping adverts from the Times, the NY Daily News and the NJ Star Ledger during the 1970s and even early 1980s while growing up in Central NJ. I had boxes of pics stashed away. The internet has made photo collecting so much simpler!

It seems to me that unfortunately, most of the furriers catering to the middle class people went out of business in the anti-fur climate of the 90s and they will never come back in the form of traditional brick and mortar fur salon format. Nowadays, the extant furriers either cater to the high end such as Dennis Basso, or to the bargain seekers such as those in the NYC Fur District.

Another factor might be that in the age of internet reaching out to the customers via newspapers might be seen as somewhat out of fashion. Facebook is huge and appropriately, many fashion brands have a presence there, but equally important, the fashion-conscious women in the 18-40 age segment are flocking to the fashion blogs, celebrity forums and other types of social media. Furthermore, for teenager girls (and those even younger), there are sites such as stardoll that combine social networking with paperdoll type of girl play, and I see some brands using those avenues to promote them in an aggressive way. Today's little girls will become tomorrow's women, so I think it is important to start early:) If it was up to me, I would try to score sponsorship deals with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Demi Levato, and Selena Gomez.

Another aspect of the issue might be cost vs sales. I think newspaper advertising for furriers does not have the "bang for the buck" that it once did. In other words the cost is too high for a negligible or nonexistent increase in sales.

In last Sunday's NY Times ther was a full page ad for fur, a half page ad, 2 quarter page ads and 1 small ad. So fur is still advertized -- at least in New York.

Well, yes -- exactly! It used to be that there would have been at least half-a-dozen ads in the colour supplement, alone!

I hear what everyone is saying, though -- it's still a shame, innit?

I used to cut out pictures from the San Francisco newspapers and magazines. Also my friend's, mother subscribed to the New Yorker, and she gave them to me when she was finished with them. The mid-1970s & into the 1980s New Yorkers were filled with fur ads.

Also all the other photos, Vogue magazines, the 1984 Fur Winter Edition of Playboy.

Too bad my ex-wife, note EX tossed all my fur photos because to her it was competion. Glad I left after Nov 1992 and have been able to pursue a furry happier life.

I am happy The Fur Den is still around. I was previously a member and am very glad to be back.
