Outbox and sent messages

In private messages, what's the difference between the outbox and sent messages?

The Outbox folder holds messages you have sent but the recipient(s) have not picked up yet. The Sent folder holds messages you sent that have been received by the recipient(s).

In other words, if you send a message to your girl friend and your wife finds out you can delete it if it is in the "out box" but not if it is in the "Sent Box". Am I right AK?

Messages can be deleted from either folder. In the mentioned scenario, timing is everything.
