Help identifying a fur

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

My mother received a fur as a gift from a friend of the family a few years back and she;s never used it. She has recently been considering selling it and asked for my help but I have no idea what it is or what it's worth. It's a full length G Michael Hennessy Design coat, it was purchased in New York, I believe she said it was bison but I have no idea. I've attached a picture. Any help in figuring out exactly what this is would be amazing, Google has unfortunately only turned up a bunch of 70s fur ads which, while cool, are not helping me much. Thank you for looking!

While the image does not show enough detail to be certain, it looks like mink to me.

Should I get more close up shots? Anything that would be helpful I am happy to provide!

Sorry for the double post. Put up a gallery up top!

matooki,

While closeup photos do help, there is always some uncertainty in identifying a fur from photos. Be patient and wait for some of our other members to offer their opinions.

Will do. Thank you for the input!

It certainly seems like mink.

The other choice would be a high quality muskrat.

Texture, guard hairs, and underfur would help in the determination.

Thank you so much for the feedback!

I'll look a bit more in what guard hairs and underfur are to help pinpoint exactly what it is.

There are a couple of local furriers here in Houston that I've considered contacting. None of them seem to do consignment but perhaps an appraisal would help me have an idea on the price range? It's never been worn for anything other than my mom trying it on once but it's been hanging in a closet inside of its storage bag for 5-6 years so would that be the sort of thing that's considered used for a fur? Or do people generally purchase used furs on things like eBay?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am very much out of my depth and I figured people passionate about this sort of thing would be the best source of information!

matooki,

Furriers will usually only give an appraisal in return for a fee. If you do get a verbal appraisal, be sure you are advised of the condition.

If the item has been stored in a garment bag, I hope it is a cloth bag as plastic is very bad for long term storage of furs.

eBay is a possibility for selling the coat, as would be a consignment shop or Craigslist.

Good Luck!
