Mr Barguzin
LOL... since this post started, and i looked for pics of Servalan (B7) and came across the fan pages, have had the theme for that show constantly coming forward in my brain... and it is driving me BONKERS!!! Anyways... the statement by ToS about WOTW remake is quite true. It was bumkem. (not liking the star doesn't help either.. even if he was married to "our Nic". And whilst on movies, does anyone remember that oldie "Day of the Triffids"? And I also recall reeading some time ago an extract from a short story by a famous author who's name escapes me at the moment (2001: A Space Odyssey) set in london where the ships are sailing and he is left behind and all he has for protection is a bunch of fur coats. Any ideas as to what the name of that story is?
Worker 11811
I have good things and bad things to say about Speilberg: The bad: When he re-released E.T. - The extraterrestrial he digitally removed all the guns and other objectionable objects. Even from the police and the army men! What a sell-out! The good: In an article from the Screen Actor's Guild trade magazine talking about directors' opinions on digital photography in movies, he was quoted as saying, "As long as there is film I will use it." Guest
Schindlers List was good but its not sci fi. I am just sayong he makes a lot of cringeable films too and is in nowhere near the same league as Ridley and Tony Scott. Talking of who...has EVERYBODY got the excellent "Hunger" series on dvd yet? The first one has room 117 and another two eposodes which are an ablsoute must for fur fans. They have a sci/fi/horror theme.
Guest
The Illistrated Man with Rod Steiger was one that bent my mind. I think it was an incredible film with none of the glitzy futuristic stuff but very much out there. OFF
snowleopard
I can't believe we have made it into the third page and nobody has mentioned V They are re-running this on the sci-fi channel over here and i am loving it all over again not to mention having it all on tape somewhere. Now Diana always seemed as though she would be perfectly suited to a full length fox, unfortunately the closest she ever came to fur was when she stuffed those little hamsters down her neck In terms of sci fi this was a must for me, you cant beat the classic over acting as Julie undergoes the mind probe. In terms of other shows I have recently bought the old (and definately the best) box set of Battlestar Galactica and have done the same for buck rogers. Now that had Princess Ardala and Wilma Deering, what a show

Guest
Methinks snowleopard likes a little kitsch on the side..... V ? (AGGGHHHHH!) I watched it mind; it wasnt bad at the time. As was (wasnt)The Tomorrow People . But one that does hold up to the test of time; its dark, sinister, glossy, ocassional fur, glamour beyond belief, violence; dark psychological issues; mutilation etc etc was the excellent and banned for ages Gerry Anderson production from the early seventies (yanked recently from a re show on sky...presumably for sex and violence complaints) UFO with ed Straker. Remember all those purple hair chicks on moonbase? I think the fur was provided by the 'more' smoking Wanda Ventham. And still the sound of those UFOs sends shudders down my spine. STOP PRESS!!!! I did a search on the site www.ufoseries.com and came up with the episode script "Timelash" which is all about Wanda Ventham pulling open her fur coat!!! Sadly no pics!!!!Anyone got it on dvd so they can post it? I remember her vaguely in a variety of furs; maybe even lynx but thats a dim recollection but I was very young and impressionable so they may not amount to much. I remember having a good old pull cos my aunt had a puple rinse so she looked like a moonbase chick except she was ALWAYS in fur. If anyone feels the inclination to do a fur search on the following (gosh the names still I can remember!) Georgina Moon, Anouska Nempel, Gabrielle drake, Antonia Ellis, Dolorez Montez, and Alyshea Bough feel free. I w*****d half my eleven year old life away on them and I can definitely remeber Anouska in fur but she's gone all zen buddhist now since shes Lady Weinberg and an interior/fashion designer and stuff so there isnt much there I wouldnt think. Guest
There is a conspiracy theory that UFO was pulled because it was too close to the mark. It concerns the activities of a covert military organisation called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation) who attempt to resist UFO raids on earth for body parts. I have my own theory. They have actually infiltrated the higer echelons of our society, are allergic to fur and smoking and are seriuosly attempting to get rid of them before a full scale invasion. If you eat Heinz food or youghurt/muesli by certain companies you become a mindless drone. They want widespread animal extinction so they can invade easily, so are persuading politicians (they have fed youghurt laced with alien bacteria) that they need to wipe out all animal dependant economies. But there is a solution. Drink large amouints of whisky mac and all becomes clear....their evil plans are exposed. Especially the alien leader Pamela Anderson. Worker 11811
Blade Runner is a good movie. That's another one that has shaped my mind. Funny thing! Sean Young wears fur in a couple scenes. She's got this thick, plushy fur coat with a huge collar! Since the whole movie is based on the concept of genetic manipulation and cloning I assume the coat in the movie is from a genetically enhanced species of fur-bearing creature! Kind of makes you think. Doesn't it? Picture of Sean Young wearing fur in BLADE RUNNER. (Not the greatest quality, though.) Can't find any other good pics of Sean Young on the 'net. I'll try to do a frame grab from my DVD collection. It's hard to find a good frame that doesn't need a lot of retouching. Most of the scenes in Blade Runner are dark and ominous. Anyhoo.. I just noticed how almost all of my favorite movies have a memorable fur scene in them. But I NEVER went around thinking, "I like [some Movie] because it has fur." I'm just noticing in retrospect. Kinda' makes me wonder...

Guest
DESTINY HARMONY RHAPSODY MELODY SYMPHONY....the Angels...pilots that fought the mysterons. I always used to want them to get taken over by the mysterons so they turned bad. There were a couple of sexy mysterons in fur once too. Captain Scarlett for those who don't know what were going on about. "They smash him, and they know he cant burn they crash him, but they know he'll return ....TO LIVE AGAIN" Best version by Siouxsie and Sid Vicious in the early days of the Banshees. Then of course there was the greatest fur wearing Anderson babe....Lady Penelope. Yes it was nice to be reminded of Bladerunner; thanks.
snowleopard
Apparently Marc Singer's career was already on a downturn when he did V, before that his height of fame was a film called Beastmaster where he had his top off most of the time or so the mrs tells me. From watching both the old batlestar galactica and buck rogers dvd's you can see that battlestar galactica has aged a lot better than buck rogers. However buck rogers did have occasional apperances from Gary Coleman and twiki is legendary until the point in the second series in deep space when his voice suddenly broke

Guest
snowlepard; When I talk about Buck Rogers I'm talking about the B&W film sereal shorts at the Saturday morning movies [1940's] and the comic books. Anything after that is a retread. Star Trek [the original] was the most significant step forward after that.. "The times they are a changin" is when it had real meaning in our lives. There were certainly a few significant Sci Fi movies [Day the Earth Stood Still] in between but nothing else quite so scocialogically significant. The amazement of each new 'story' as each episode unfolded still captures the imagination of those first views and the individuals who watched them. Guest
I have to disagree there Off. Each generation of sci fi reflects its own time. What was most significant about the fifties was the air of paranoia about communism and fear of cold war turning hot, or subversive fifth columnists. The enemy was within, and thats frightening. The result was some genuinely scary movies: "The Thing from Another World"(amazingly frightening even now...claustrophobic and inducing sweaty palms) "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" "Forbidden Planet" "Them" "War of The Worlds" I think was later but the same ilk and also very good...especially when the priest gets fried. I still love movies where tanks and planes are pitted against spaceships too! And so yes "The Day the Earth stood still" was a classic And many many others, including the fabulously unnerving British film and series "Quatermass" Buck Rogers on the other hand, whilst enjoyable, reflected the heyday of nostalgic western culture: its essentially a cowboy movie in space. So for me whilst I accept your interpretation of the sixties and its brave new world ideas; hopeful, positive bright outward looking and all embracing, with the iconic "space the final frontier" its best not to forget darker times if we really want edge of seat thrills. And oh, incidentally, the creature in The Thing was James Arness from Gunsmoke I think. Oh and Clint Eastwood made his film debut in another sci fi movie: Tarantula where he played a pilot

Guest
touch; I agree with what you say about reflections of the time which is why my comments about Buck Rogers. He was from the Depression and WWII. Later retakes are meaningless to its origins. The 50's was my addolescence and Senator Joseph MacCarthy. Think Horror movies are bad. Just try watching that insane paranoid freak. One that hasn't been brought up that is still running from the 50's is "The Twilight Zone". Gotta be a record and even the reruns aren't bad. Rod Serling is a graduate from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, a very interesting Colege. OFF
s1m17
I enjoy Sci-Fi movies and have been watching the latest Doctor Who series. Star Wars (not I-III) are great classics. Worker 11811
I'm not old enough to have been around for the original "Body Snatchers" but the '78 version, I remember well. Creeped me out for days! Though I know "Buck Rogers" is a serial, the TV show of 1979 vintage is what I remember best. Pamela Hensley was Princess Ardala. What a babe! I have seen some of the serial Buck Rogers on late night TV. You're right, though the old Buck Rogers are a lot like the newer Star Trek. I'm a "T.O.S." man, myself. (The Original Series.) I enjoy the new ones but they just don't have the same appeal. The just don't have the sense of adventure that the originals do. (That same sense of adventure that Buck Rogers had.) Who could mention Star Trek without bringing up Tribbles!? Gotta love 'em! There IS one episode of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 that I remember especiall well: It's called Trials and Tribble-Ations The DS-9 crew get transported back in time to the original Enterprise. They are one board during the original incident with the tribbles. That's the one where Jadzea Dax ends up crawling on her hands and knees through a cargo hold chock full of tribbles while wearing one of those T.O.S. mini skirts! Just thinking about it gives me fur fits! P.S.: Got that frame grab for y'all! Sean Young from "Blade Runner" Hot looking woman wearing fur coat aside, this is just one of those movies that everybody needs to see, AFAIC. If you don't have it in your collection, I whole heartedly recommend that you go out and buy or rent a copy right now.
