Thoughts on altering a vintage fur

i bought a vintage raccoon fur coat and was thinking about getting it altered.

That will only be possible if the pelts are still pliable. Unfortunately as furs age the leather dries out, becomes stiff, and starts to fall apart. The one thing in your favor is that older pelts were usually not fleshed (scraped) as much as most tanners do today. Thus the thicker leather of older furs tends to make them last longer.
